It says further improvements will be necessary to meet much tougher European standards due to apply from 2030.

New figures published alongside the report reveal that just 7% of Irish monitoring stations currently meet the World Health Organisation’s recommended guideline for fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5.

These microscopic particles, generated particularly by the burning of solid fuels in homes, are so small they can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially causing serious health problems.

The EPA estimated that exposure to PM2.5 pollution is responsible for approximately 1,500 premature deaths in Ireland annually.

The report highlighted the scale of the challenge facing Ireland as the EU prepares to introduce substantially stricter air-quality requirements from 2030.

Although all monitoring stations complied with the existing European standards last year, only 93%would have met the new limit for fine particulate matter.

<img decoding="async" alt="A general view of Dublin Waste-to-Energy Facility also know as Poolbeg Incinerator, located in Poolberg Peninsula. The tougher air pollution limits it brings will apply from 2030.

The EPA said continued Government funding of infrastructure, household supports and enforcement measures will be essential if Ireland is to meet these new obligations.

Director of the EPA’s Office of Radiation Protection and Environmental Monitoring Pat Byrne said further improvements could be achieved through practical local action and sustained investment.

“Continued improvement in air quality is possible with practical local action and sustained investment in supporting cleaner heating, promoting home energy retrofitting, improving public transport and encouraging active travel,” he said.

The report also highlighted research indicating that air quality is generally poorer in lower-income communities, underlining the importance of targeted support to reduce household dependence on solid fuels.

Local authorities are being urged to maintain enforcement of regulations banning the sale of smoky fuels, promote household energy upgrades and support investment in walking, cycling and other alternatives to car travel.

The EPA said continued investment in home retrofitting and cleaner heating technologies will help reduce emissions while delivering wider public-health benefits.

Real-time local information on air quality is available through the EPA’s airquality.ie website, where readings are updated hourly.

EPA Programme Manager for Environmental Monitoring and Surveillance Warren Phelan said maintaining progress would require commitment across Government, local authorities, businesses and communities.

“Clean air is essential for good health, and Ireland’s air quality is generally good,” he said.

“By working together, we can reduce exposure to air pollution, improve quality of life, and create healthier places to live and work,” he added.

An estimated 1,500 people are dying prematurely in Ireland each year because of exposure to air pollution, despite…

[22
246,61,60,82
post-661596","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-science
["GET
