A Victorian coroner has ruled that gambling addiction contributed to the suicide of 22-year-old Kyle Hudson in 2021.Hudson opened a Sportsbet account on his 18th birthday and wagered approximately $895,000 with various betting companies.<\/p>\n

The coroner\u2019s findings urged the federal government to consider banning gambling advertisements across media.<\/p>\n

Hudson\u2019s net losses reached $47,945, a significant amount for a young adult studying part-time.<\/p>\n

His gambling intensified, culminating in significant betting losses shortly before his death, which was discovered by his mother.<\/p>\n

Coroner Paul Lawrie noted that Hudson exhibited no prior mental health or substance abuse issues.<\/p>\n

Lawrie described Hudson as \u201ca young man brimming with promise,\u201d reflecting on the tragedy of his death.<\/p>\n

Efforts by Hudson\u2019s girlfriend to manage his finances and limit his gambling were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

Sportsbet contended that Hudson did not have a gambling addiction despite the findings.<\/p>\n

The coroner recommended banning gambling inducements, such as \u201cbonus bets,\u201d aimed at young customers.<\/p>\n

He also suggested establishing a national data vault to assess gambling behaviour and monitoring effectiveness.<\/p>\n

The coroner pointed out that betting companies could not see a gambler\u2019s overall activity across different platforms.<\/p>\n

Sportsbet had previously suspended Hudson\u2019s account but allowed reactivation based on his claims of responsible betting.<\/p>\n

Lawrie criticized Sportsbet\u2019s stance, characterizing it as chilling given the outcome of Hudson\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged that while direct evidence linking ads to Hudson\u2019s behaviour was lacking, the influence of advertising is undeniable.<\/p>\n

Coroner Lawrie emphasized that revenue generated from sports betting largely stems from the losses of vulnerable gamblers.<\/p>\n

The findings prompted comments from Hudson\u2019s family, who expressed satisfaction with the coroner\u2019s conclusions.<\/p>\n

Consumer protections<\/p>\n

Sportsbet responded, acknowledging the tragedy and stating their commitment to improving consumer protections.<\/p>\n

Australians spend around $30 billion annually on gambling, positioning the country as a leader in per capita gambling losses.<\/p>\n

New national gambling regulations will take effect in January, introducing an opt-out service for online betting advertisements.<\/p>\n

These measures fall short of proposals made by late Labor MP Peta Murphy, advocating for a complete ban on ads during sports events.<\/p>\n
