Android trackers and AirTags are great for keeping track of your luggage or your keys. You can use your phone to see the location of your tracker and even get precise directions to locate some trackers once you’re in their general location. There are some clever ways to use Android trackers and AirTags that go beyond just keeping tabs on your bags.<\/p>\n

Use your tracker to find your phone<\/p>\n

Some trackers can work in reverse<\/p>\n

The standard way to use a tracker is to open your phone to see the location of your tag. Apps such as Apple’s Find My or Google’s Find Hub<\/a> let you see the location of your trackers on a map. However, with some trackers, you can do things the other way round.<\/p>\n

Instead of using your phone to find your tracker, you can use your tracker to find your phone. Some models can make your paired Android phone ring when you press buttons on the trackers themselves. If you have a tracker on your keyring, for example, you can pull it out and press the button to make your phone ring if you’ve lost it somewhere around the house.<\/p>\n

This doesn’t work on every tracker. The Motorola Moto Tag<\/a> will ring your phone with a double-press of the tracker’s button, although you have to enable the feature in the app. The button on the newer Moto Tag 2 can also ring your phone, or you can even use it as a remote for your phone’s camera. Some Pebblebee trackers<\/a>, such as the Clip, Card, and Tag Gen 2 also support finding your phone.<\/p>\n

This is something that can stop a lot of arguments. If your family has a portable device that you share, such as a Nintendo Switch or a camra, all hell can break loose if it goes missing. A lot of accusations and blame get thrown around (usually by me), only to find that it was under some papers on my desk the whole time.<\/p>\n

A tracker attached to your device or its case can solve this problem. By connecting a tag to a shared device, you can easily find it when it goes missing, removing the need for everyone to argue about who has it. Google’s Find Hub supports sharing trackers with up to 10 other people, and Apple AirTags<\/a> can be shared with up to 5 additional people, so everyone can keep tabs on shared devices from their own phones.<\/p>\n

A hidden tracker could help you recover your property<\/p>\n

Bikes and e-scooters are great ways to get around, but they can be an easy target for thieves. Even if you lock your bike up, you may come back to find the lock has been cut in half and your bike is gone.<\/p>\n

A tracker can’t stop your bike or e-scooter from being stolen, but it can help you keep track of its location if the worst happens. A tracker that’s easy to spot is likely to get removed by thieves, but if you keep one hidden beneath your saddle or in another concealed location, it can be harder to discover. You can even buy dedicated mounts for AirTags and other trackers, including models that can fit under bottle cages or in other hidden locations.<\/p>\n

The solution isn’t perfect. Both AirTags and Android trackers can alert someone when an unfamiliar tracker<\/a> appears to be traveling with them, to prevent trackers being used for stalking. You may not have a huge amount of time to inform the police and provide the location of your bike before it is discovered.<\/p>\n

Keep tabs on your pets<\/p>\n

You can even tell them when it’s time to come home<\/p>\n

Your bike is a valuable item, but some things are beyond price. If you have pets, trackers can be a great way to keep tabs on them, so you know if they’re just in the neighbor’s garden again or have actually wandered off and gotten lost.<\/p>\n

It’s easy to attach a small tracker to a pet’s collar so that you can keep track of the location. Some people have even managed to take things a little further by getting the tag to play a sound when it’s time for the pet to return home. There are reports of people training their cats to come back when they hear the beep from the tracker.<\/p>\n

Get warned when you leave something behind<\/p>\n

Apple’s Find My app has a feature called Notify When Left Behind. When your phone is separated from your AirTag, you get a notification on your iPhone. For example, if you have an AirTag on your keys and you leave them behind in a coffee shop, your phone will let you know that you’ve been separated from your AirTag.<\/p>\n

You can set up an exclusion area so that you’re not getting alerts every time you leave your keys by the front door and walk away. You can use multiple exclusion zones, such as your home, place of work, or other places where you’re likely to get separated from your AirTag regularly.<\/p>\n

If you’re an Android user, the upcoming Pixel Tag<\/a> will support similar left-behind alerts, and Google has recently rolled out updates that can allow users to set up left-behind reminders in Find Hub for supported tags.<\/p>\n

Android trackers and AirTags can do a lot<\/p>\n

Knowing that your luggage is in Zimbabwe when your flight has just landed in New York may not be good news, but at least you’re aware of the problem.
