A sneak peek at the future for Munster’s favourite airport<\/p>\n

There are major works underway at Cork Airport<\/a> as part of an ambitious capital development plan, which will see \u20ac200m worth of upgrades installed at the airport over the next few years.<\/p>\n

For passengers, this means a larger duty-free area, more parking, faster security checks, and eventually more routes to choose from<\/a> when flying out of Munster’s favourite airport. While the final completion date is still years out, crews have been working day and night to bring the first round of upgrades into use.<\/p>\n

The new passenger area currently under construction will feature automatic entry gates, as seen in many EU airports, a new fast-track security lane, and scanners that will allow passengers to keep electronics and liquids in their bags as they pass through security.<\/p>\n

All of this work has been going on behind a massive screen installed at the airport, and whether you’ve flown out of Cork or just popped in to pick up a passenger coming home, you’ll no doubt have wondered exactly what’s going on back there – thankfully, one man has the answers.<\/p>\n

In recent weeks, Mick Campbell of the Irish Skies Pod <\/a>joined Cork Airport communications manager Barry Holland and project manager Shane Donohue for a behind-the-scenes look at the impressive upgrade works<\/p>\n

Other long-term upgrades include demolishing the old terminal building and control tower to make way for a new pier to accommodate additional aircraft, and adding an estimated 1,700 new long-term parking spaces by the time the project wraps up.<\/p>\n

The new mezzanine floor is expected to come into use by the end of the year, and these car parking spaces are to be brought into use by next summer.
