You want things to be unpredictable,” she said.

“I suppose the reason why I was so interested in the first place was that I felt like it was such a potent situation.”

Fergie Chambers is an American multimillionaire heir and self-described communist activist

A complicated relationship with wealth and power

O’Shea said there were aspects of Chambers’ character that she appreciated, particularly his willingness to speak about economic inequality.

Asked whether she had warmed to him initially, she said: “Yes, there were characteristics about him that I always liked.”

“I did always appreciate that he was willing to be so honest about rich people and that he felt the wealth in America was so unjust,” she continued.

Born into one of America’s wealthiest families, Chambers has sought to use his inherited fortune to support causes intended to challenge the existing economic order.

The film explores the questions that arise when a movement advocating greater equality receives financial backing from someone with considerable personal wealth.

O’Shea said Chambers was aware of the tensions involved, but believed they were difficult to resolve.

“I think that’s the problem with extreme wealth, it distorts everything around you and it changes everybody’s behaviour, and I think it’s very difficult to know who to trust or what to do,” she said.

“I think that level of inequality is very difficult to bridge.”

Chambers is currently being held in a Spanish prison as he fights extradition to the United States.

Reflecting on his political ambitions, O’Shea suggested that his commitment to political change may have remained despite his circumstances.

“To be honest, I’d say he still does believe that,” she said of his conviction that he could change the world.

“I’m sure I’m slightly jumping the gun a little, but now he’s in prison I’m sure he’s evaluating how he’s going to proceed next. I can’t speak for his feelings right now, but I’d imagine it’s been such a long-held ambition.”

From communist activism to a Tunisian football stadium

One scene in the documentary concerns Chambers’ involvement with Tunisian football club Club Africain in July 2024, when he became its major financial backer through a sponsorship agreement.

O’Shea said she initially struggled to understand the scale of his involvement after receiving a message from Chambers saying he had bought a football team.

“I just didn’t really know what he meant,” she said.

The scale of the occasion became clearer when she saw the response to Chambers in person.

“Sometimes some of these stories can sound quite fanciful, but actually, it was true, he was being mobbed wherever he went and people were chanting his name and calling out to him.”

O’Shea said the scale of the stadium and the occasion made a strong impression on her.

“And it was just this huge proper stadium – and it was the opening home game of the season, the whole thing was so official. That whole experience was so jaw-dropping.”

Fergie Chambers sits in a cafe in Tunisia in 2024

A film its subject did not want screened

According to the O’Shea, Chambers offered to fund the entire production on the condition that it would never be screened.
