The weather didn’t play ball, but it didn’t deter the players from Ireland and Scotland as they met in a double header of shinty/camogie/hurling games at SuperValu Páirc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday.

The game sees the Irish players using hurleys and their Scottish counterparts using a stick, similar to an ice hockey one.

Rules are similar to hurling and camogie, with a few exceptions. It’s mainly ground hurling, but the Irish players could rise the ball and run with it, but couldn’t catch it.

After two thrilling games, the Irish women retained their title winning by 9-11 to 1-3. The men were stopped from making it four in a row as Scotland won with a late point, 4-12 to 2-17.

In the women’s game, Aimie Nolan got the first goal of the game for Ireland, before Scotland hit back with a point from Megan Ralph.

Lorna MacRae made it 1-0 to 0-2, before Ralph goaled for Scotland, to make it 1-2 to 1-0 after 12 minutes.

Nolan goaled again for Ireland, and Sinead Wylde got their third to make it 3-0 to 1-2.

Nolan goaled again, and Laura Hayes got another to see Ireland lead by 5-4 to 1-2 at half-time. Ireland, now with the wind, soon increased their lead with Naoise Hughes and Hayes pointing, before Isobel Sheehan got their sixth goal.

Iona McCulloch replied for Scotland, but Ireland were now dominating. Anais Curran added another goal, with Sheehan adding a point, to make it 7-7 to 1-3. Saoirse McCarthy added another goal for Ireland, with Hughes pointing to make it 8-8 to 1-3.

Nolan got her fourth goal before Hayes and Curran pointed to increase Ireland’s lead further. Fittingly, Nolan got the last score as Ireland retained their camogie/shinty title in style, winning by 9-11 to 1-3. In the men’s game, Scotland got off to the better start with Zander Michie and Calum McLay putting them into a 1-1 to 0-1 lead, with the latter getting their goal.

Ruaridh Anderson increased their lead before Michie scored a score worth the entrance fee alone. He pointed a long-range free from the ground, to make it 1-3 to 0-1. McLay and Gerard Walsh, with his second, made it 1-4 to 0-2, before Michie repeated his feat. This time, he scored from a 65 off the ground, an unbelievable piece of skill.

Andrew Ormond pointed two frees, before McLay goaled for Scotland, to make it 2-5 to 0-4. Straight from the restart, Darragh Neary replied with a goal for Ireland, and Diarmaid Stritch got another to close the gap.

Declan Brannan got the last score of the half, when this time he pointed off the ground from a 65 to make it 2-7 to 2-4 in Scotland’s favour at half-time. Ireland came more into the game with points from Cian O’Sullivan, Ormond, and Seamus Harnedy seeing the sides level after 55 minutes, 2-8 each.

Aaron Dunphy put Ireland in front for the first time, but with 70 minutes gone, they were dealt a blow when Iain Robinson got Scotland’s third goal, to make it 3-10 to 2-11.

Three from Dunphy helped put Ireland back in front as they led by 2-15 to 3-10 after 79 minutes.

Sam O’Farrell extended their lead, before Innes Blackhall got Scotland’s fourth goal in injury time to put his side a point ahead, 4-11 to 2-16.

Billy Nolan equalised, but Michie got the clinching score when he pointed from a penalty to see Scotland win by 4-12 to 2-17.
