Elon Musk has said his company SpaceX had throttled the Starlink satellite internet service in Ukraine, disrupting operations that the country relies on to defend itself against Russia.<\/p>\n
Mr Musk\u2019s admission on social media came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine\u2019s access to Starlink and Starshield satellite links has been restored to the speeds it had before restrictions that disrupted frontline operations for more than a week.<\/p>\n
Questions have persisted since last week about who ordered the interruptions to the Musk-made satellite internet system that Kyiv has relied on for years to counter Moscow\u2019s attacks.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe speeds are now where they need to be,\u201d Mr Zelensky wrote on X, adding that restoration began overnight and were sufficient by Saturday morning, improving frontline logistics and defense against Russian jet-powered Shahed drones.<\/p>\n
After Ukraine said the services had been restored, Mr Musk spoke out on the speed restrictions that began last week.<\/p>\n
In a post on Saturday on X, Mr Musk acknowledged that his company SpaceX throttled the Starlink satellite internet service.<\/p>\n
\u201cUsing Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people has never been allowed, nor should it be,\u201d Mr Musk wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cUkraine military violated Starlink terms of service and used it for offensive drone strikes to kill people. That loophole was closed last week.\u201d<\/p>\n
But he maintained that the US government controlled whatever changes happened with Starshield, the military-grade version of Starlink that is the backbone of Ukraine\u2019s drone operations and communication.<\/p>\n
He also defended the role of SpaceX in bolstering Ukraine\u2019s defences since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.<\/p>\n
Restrictions imposed last week on Starshield alarmed the country\u2019s military and government officials, with commanders reporting lost drones and disrupted missions.<\/p>\n
The restoration follows a new US diplomatic push to end the war.<\/p>\n
Russia agreed on Wednesday to resume three-way negotiations with Washington and Kyiv next month.<\/p>\n
On Friday, Kyiv and Moscow also agreed to a localised ceasefire brokered by US first lady Melania Trump around Oleshky, a war-ravaged, Russian-occupied town in Ukraine\u2019s southern Kherson region.<\/p>\n
The episode added to tensions between Kyiv and Washington, a relationship already strained by President Donald Trump\u2019s reported deal with Moscow on Russian diesel imports, which Ukraine viewed as a betrayal.<\/p>\n
Ukraine\u2019s defence minister Yevhenii Khmara credited \u201cdirect dialogue\u201d and Mr Zelensky\u2019s diplomacy with Washington, adding that the outcome mattered most \u201cfor our front, for the military, the work of drones, logistics and communications\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump has maintained that he did not make the call, while also saying Mr Musk should not be blamed.<\/p>\n
Vice president JD Vance has hinted at White House co-ordination with Mr Musk, while US secretary of state Marco Rubio and defence secretary Pete Hegseth have denied any administration involvement.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a man was killed and two others wounded in a missile attack on the city of Lozova in Ukraine\u2019s Kharkiv region, local officials said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Moscow-installed authorities in cities across Russia-occupied Crimea reported power blackouts on Saturday following overnight Ukrainian attacks.<\/p>\n
Ukraine\u2019s General Staff said on Saturday that its forces hit a chemical plant in the Russian city of Tolyatti, which produces materials used in rocket fuel.<\/p>\n
Tolyatti mayor Ilya Sukhikh said the overnight attack damaged industrial facilities in the city.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian forces also hit an electronics plant in the city of Oryol, Ukraine\u2019s General Staff confirmed on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Local officials in Oryol said on Saturday that three people were killed in Friday\u2019s attack.<\/p>\n
The General Staff said the plant makes components for the cruise and ballistic missiles Russia fires at Ukrainian cities.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian drones also reached Russia\u2019s Omsk region in western Siberia, more than 2,000 kilometres (1,242 miles) from the border with Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Omsk regional governor Vitaly Khotsenko said drones \u201creached a northern industrial hub\u201d.<\/p>\n
Online retailer Ozon said on Saturday that its logistics centre in Omsk has been attacked by a drone, but there were no casualties.<\/p>\n
