A celebration to mark the 300th anniversary of Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels” will take place in Cavan today.

Gulliver 300 will highlight the fact that Swift wrote much of the classic satire in Cavan and was inspired by the Breffni County.

Today’s events will include interactive workshops, a Gulliver’s Travels theatrical ensemble and folklore storytelling.

The main event will see the “sleeping giant” awaken, when a 20-foot large scale lantern sculpture will light up at Urney Church at 5pm, to the sound of the Cavan Sinfonia Orchestra and Cavan singers across the street at the courthouse.

A short film inspired by Gulliver’s Travels will also be digitally mapped onto the courthouse facade, while a “dark skies lantern parade” will see over 100 handcrafted lanterns march through Cavan town.

Cavan County Council’s Arts Officer, Karina Charles-Lynch said the event honours the legacy of Jonathan Swift.

“It’s still a little-known fact that Jonathan Swift wrote much of Gulliver’s Travels in Mullagh in Co Cavan while he was staying with his good friend Thomas Sheridan in Quilca House, this event is about honouring that legacy and the influence that our beautiful county and its people had on one of the English language’s most enduring literary classics”.

Gulliver 300 is taking place in association with the county’s new sustainability festival, “Eco Féile”.

A celebration to mark the 300th anniversary of Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels” will take place in Cavan today.…

[8
93,61,60
post-664615","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entertainment","tag-entertainment","tag-ie","tag-ireland
["GET
