RUSSELL BRAND\u2019S FORMER personal assistant told a court she saw women being mistreated by the comedian and quit working for him when she was \u201csick of him\u201d.<\/p>\n
Helen Berger worked closely with Brand from June 2006 to February 2007, when he was a star of MTV, Channel 4, and BBC, while writing a book and performing his stand-up to sell-out crowds.<\/p>\n
She told Southwark Crown Court that \u201cpeacock\u201d Brand found random women online to satisfy his \u201cinsane sexual appetite\u201d, but sex often made him depressed.<\/p>\n
In a statement to Brand\u2019s rape and sexual assault trial, Berger said she saw him \u201ctreat women poorly\u201d, and accused those close to him of \u201cnormalising bad behaviour\u201d.<\/p>\n
She said in a statement read to Southwark Crown Court on Monday: \u201cThough I\u2019ve worked with a lot of celebrities before and seen a lot of people normalising bad behaviour, this was on another level.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cNormalising and dismissing Russell\u2019s behaviour made me think, \u2018this is just the way it is here\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Berger said Brand had \u201can insane sexual appetite and was sleeping with people day and night\u201d, and she recalled the comedian \u201cgetting antsy\u201d when they were on deadlines, joking: \u201cMay I go and have sex now?\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Berger said Brand once conducted an interview with actress Sadie Frost while dressed only in his pants and an open robe.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I went to Russell\u2019s flat he was always in his underwear, he loved walking around in his underwear with no shirt on\u201d, saying of the encounter with Frost: \u201cHe did the whole interview in his underwear, no shirt, and an open robe.<\/p>\n
Berger told the court she worked for Brand through his agent, John Noel, and would often be called on to go to the comedian\u2019s flat in Camden, north London.<\/p>\n

\u201cI worked a lot and was exhausted, emotional, and it was a lot to deal with.<\/p>\n
\u201cI always had to manage my emotions around him.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe had an insane sexual appetite and was sleeping with people day and night.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was very open about what his needs were; we didn\u2019t have a specific conversation about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Berger said part of her job was to review Brand\u2019s press coverage, including interviews where he had talked openly about his sexual encounters and desires.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe never seemed happy after sex, more so depressed,\u201d she observed.<\/p>\n
She told the court Brand used MySpace to find women for sex, and said: \u201cAt his house, women often came over and it was clear they were there for sex.\u201d<\/p>\n
She remembers once finding a female celebrity asleep in Brand\u2019s bed while he was wandering around the house half-dressed, and said of the comedian: \u201cHe was like a peacock, women would always approach him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Berger said she was instructed to get phone numbers for Brand from female fans when she first started working with him.<\/p>\n
But she said she \u201cfelt uncomfortable\u201d and, after seeking advice, she told Brand that she would not do that any more.<\/p>\n
Berger also recalled seeing Brand dismiss a woman he was chatting to at a party as soon as he realised she was in a relationship.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cHe turned in a way that really startled me.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe literally switched off his charm and moved on to the next woman.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ending her statement, Berger said she quit the job after nine months when she was \u201csick of him and feeling burned out\u201d.<\/p>\n
Brand is accused of three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one charge of indecent assault.<\/p>\n
He denies all the charges.<\/p>\n
Mr Justice Bennathan told jurors on Monday morning that the prosecution case has nearly finished, and they will start to hear the defence case on Tuesday lunchtime.<\/p>\n
