Moritz Grossmann<\/a> continues to celebrate the 200th anniversary of its founder, Carl Moritz Grossmann (1826-1885), a key figure in Glash\u00fctte\u2019s rise as a powerhouse of German watchmaking. After releasing seven anniversary models<\/a> this year, the brand is launching a second celebratory edition of its unique Hamatic watch, powered by a pendulum-style hammer weight. Although the protagonist of this delightfully anachronistic watch lies on the reverse, the two new references, offered in 41mm rose gold or white gold cases, feature stunning jet black enamel dials.<\/p>\n

Born in Dresden in 1826, Carl Moritz Grossmann was persuaded by his friend Ferdinand Adolph Lange to establish a mechanical workshop in Glash\u00fctte. He gained fame for his specialised and highly efficient watchmaking tools, pocket watches, marine chronometers and precision pendulum clocks, and he was also a co-founder of the German School of Watchmaking.<\/p>\n

Released in 2018<\/a>, the Hamatic<\/a> is a surprising watch with a hammer-style winding rotor, directly inspired by the earliest perpetual winding systems in pocket watches with hammer or bumper winding mechanisms produced by Breguet and others in the late 18th century. Unlike rotors with a 360-degree rotation, Moritz Grossmann\u2019s in-house calibre 106.0 features a hammer with a solid gold mass on its extremity swinging in a short arc like a pendulum to load the mainspring with a 72-hour power reserve. In addition to in-house movements, Moritz Grossmann flies the flag of Sch\u00f6nstes deutsches Handwerk \u2013 the most beautiful German craftsmanship \u2013 clearly displayed here on the jet black enamel dial. To achieve the dial\u2019s lustre, depth and durability, ground glass mixed with metal oxides is fired in a kiln at extreme temperatures, a process repeated multiple times.<\/p>\n

Before the release of the 2026 anniversary editions<\/a>, the Hamatic was available with Roman numerals; the anniversary editions feature elegant applied white or rose gold Arabic numerals. Like earlier Hamatics, it features a peripheral railway-style minutes track, a slightly recessed small seconds counter at 6 o\u2019clock, and the brand\u2019s signature handmade, polished rose gold or steel hour and minute hands. As a tribute to the founder, the letters of the M. Grossmann signature emulate the 1875 typeface.<\/p>\n

The reverse side offers a fascinating view of the pendulum-style hammer rotor. Because it is openworked, other elements of the movement are visible, including the signature Saxon German silver 2\/3 plate, the broad Glash\u00fctte ribbing, the raised gold chatons, the violet-annealed screws and the cantilevered balance cock engraved by hand, including the year \u201c1826\u201d in honour of the founder. The movement runs at 21,600vph and features an in-house Grossmann balance with 4 inertia and 2 poising screws.<\/p>\n

The polished 41mm gold cases have a height of 11.35mm and feature the brand\u2019s conical crown. The two versions of the Hamatic Enamel are limited to eight watches and are paired with hand-stitched alligator leather straps and gold prong buckles. Both retail for EUR 63,500 (excl. tax).
