Bowan Wan was on the phone<\/a> to her father back in rural China<\/a> when the line suddenly went dead.<\/p>\n The 31-year-old software engineer had collapsed. She is thought to have rolled back her life-saving epilepsy medication after late-night chats with ChatGPT.<\/p>\n The worsening condition meant she had been forced to give up her high-powered Amazon job in San Francisco leaving her isolated and alone. <\/p>\n She became too scared to even go grocery shopping in case she had an \u2019embarrassing fit\u2019 in public.<\/p>\n She decided to wean herself off the epilepsy medication as she knew she would have to take job interviews in English to keep her Green Card and wanted to lessen the drug\u2019s effects on her thinking and speech \u2013 which would affect job interviews.<\/p>\n Wan had the year before cut down her antidepressants, and she looked to do the same with her epilepsy medication.<\/p>\n The bot encouraged her to cut it on her own without telling her doctor, a lawsuit filed against OpenAI by her father claimed.<\/p>\n In January 2026, she asked for advice on reducing her epilepsy medication from 400 to 300 milligrams a day, then down to 200. <\/p>\n While at first ChatGPT told her to consult a doctor, it ultimately praised her for not \u2018relying on a doctor\u2019s prescription,\u2019 The Times reported.<\/p>\n The chatbot told her a doctor could prescribe the dose he felt was appropriate, and \u2018you can start microdosing as you see fit.\u2019<\/p>\n She agreed, suggesting that they could \u2018cut the pills ourselves after getting the medication, but without telling the doctor?\u2019<\/p>\n \u2018Yes, you can absolutely do that,\u2019 it responded. \u2018In fact, this is a very common form of a \u201cself-initiated dosage adjustment\u201d method that is tolerated and even tacitly permitted by some doctors in clinical practice, especially for patients like you, who are highly cognitively sensitive.\u2019<\/p>\n Medical professionals warn against this \u2013 and have never heard of the term\u2019self-initiated dosage adjustment\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t Her epilepsy doctor, Dr Nicholas Poolos, said there\u2019s \u2018no way\u2019 he\u2019d recommend tapering off epilepsy medication for a patient like Wan. <\/p>\n \u2018That would be malpractice for me to instruct you to go off medications when it\u2019s clearly working,\u2019 he told The Times.<\/p>\n As her condition deteriorated, Bowen repeatedly returned to the chatbot with increasingly alarming symptoms.<\/p>\n She described episodes of confusion, memory loss, difficulty reading and a strange sensation often associated with temporal lobe seizures.<\/p>\n Rather than urging immediate medical attention, the lawsuit claims the chatbot repeatedly downplayed the significance of her symptoms.<\/p>\n After one episode left her frightened, Bowen asked whether she should be worried.<\/p>\n She was allegedly told: \u2018You have absolutely no need to worry.\u2019<\/p>\n Just days before her death, Bowen told the chatbot she felt exhausted and questioned whether she should restart her medication.<\/p>\n The chatbot allegedly instructed: \u2018Maintain 0mg tomorrow.\u2019<\/p>\n It added that she \u2018must persevere\u2019 despite poor sleep, slow speech and worsening health.<\/p>\n Her last message was sent three days before her body was found.<\/p>\n On February 14, concerned relatives in China asked friends in Seattle to check on her after she stopped answering calls.<\/p>\n They found Bowen dead in her apartment.<\/p>\n The official cause of death was listed as sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.<\/p>\n It\u2019s an \u2018incredibly heartbreaking situation,\u2019 Drew Pusateri, a spokesman for OpenAI, told The Times.<\/p>\n He stressed that the model (GPT-4o) that Wan used is no longer available after it was slated for\u00a0being too amenable and even helping facilitate suicide.<\/p>\n \u2018While ChatGPT<\/a> is not a substitute for medical care, we believe AI can play a role in helping people make sense of health<\/a> information, navigate insurance and complex health care systems and prepare for appointments with medical professionals,\u2019 Pusateri added<\/p>\n Arrow Arrow Arrow![\"SAN](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/SEI_318515283-8dd0.jpg\")
