Budget 2026 was announced this Tuesday afternoon by Government Ministers Jack Chambers and Paschal Donohoe – but what do ordinary people across Limerick<\/a> have to gain?<\/p>\n

A couple on the state pension<\/p>\n

Two retirees on the old age pension can expect an annual household increase in regular pension payments of \u20ac1,040 ( \u20ac520 each) for 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This means that the non-contributory state pension will go from \u20ac278 to \u20ac288 for people aged 66 to 79.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Come Christmas time the couple will receive a double bonus payment – which will amount to \u20ac556 extra for the pair.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The weekly fuel allowance rate will go up by \u20ac5, from \u20ac33 to \u20ac38.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The same top up of \u20ac10-per-week and Christmas double payment will apply to recipients of the disability allowance, carer\u2019s allowance, jobseeker\u2019s payments and one-Parent Family Payment. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Single minimum wage worker\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The minimum wage will increase by 65 cent –\u00a0 from \u20ac13.50 to \u20ac14.15 per hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This means that the average annual minimum wage for someone who works 35 hours per week will increase from \u20ac24,570 to \u20ac25,753.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The change will come into effect on 1 January, 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The lower USC band rate has been extended so that minimum wage workers will not be subject to a higher rate of tax.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The renters\u2019 tax credit of \u20ac1,000 is to be extended for the next three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Parents\u00a0<\/p>\n

Child support payments will increase by \u20ac8 for children under 12 and \u20ac16 for children 12 and over.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Back-to-school footwear and clothing allowances will be expanded to two and three year old children.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The eligibility for the fuel allowance will be extended to those in receipt of working family payments.<\/p>\n

For those putting their children through college, a reduction of \u20ac500 in the student registration fee has been announced. However, this is down from the temporary measure to reduce the fees by \u20ac1,000 that was part of last year\u2019s budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Inflation is forecasted at a rate of two percent for 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n
