TV

RTÉ2 will have live coverage of the Ulster first round clash between first-time Tyrone champions Edendork and Monaghan’s Clonduff from 6pm (6.15 throw-in).

TG4 will broadcast a live hurling double header on Sunday, starting with the Munster clash of Cork champions Glen Rovers and Inagh-Kilnamona of Clare at 1.15pm, followed by the meeting of Tommy Larkin’s and Loughrea to decide the outcome of the Galway hurling championship at 3pm.

WEATHER

Saturday will start out cloudy and wet in the north and west, with that rain gradually moving southeastwards becoming lighter and patchier as it does so. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees in light variable winds.

Sunday looks set to be a drier day. High pressure will start to build into Sunday, bringing mostly dry and calm conditions, with sunny spells developing, although cloudier over the northern half of the country. A cooler day with highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees in a light northerly wind.

We are closing in on the conclusion of the county championships, with four finals spread evenly over both codes this weekend.

The Galway hurling showpiece is the pick of those games, while Leitrim (hurling), Kildare (football) and Limerick (football) finals are also down for decision.

With the provincial championships kicking into gear there are a couple of blockbuster encounters on offer.

The RTÉ cameras will be in Newry to see if Edendork can come down from their emotional high of a maiden Tyrone title when they face Clonduff of Down. On Sunday there are three Leinster first-round games slated to take place.

The other eye-catching fixture on Sunday is the only provincial hurling game taking place this weekend when Clare champions Inagh-Kilnamona travel to Páirc Uí Rinn to take on Glen Rovers.

HURLING

While there are just three hurling games this weekend, two of those carry significant weight and both will be live on our screens.

On Sunday all eyes will be on Tommy Larkin’s in the Galway showpiece as they feature in their first final in 55 years.

Goalkeeper Eanna Murphy and the influential Cian Daniels provide inter-county class, but it’s a former Tribe that is likely to carry their hopes and dreams of lifting the Tom Callinan Cup.

Jason Flynn’s haul of 0-13 against a fancied Clarinbridge in the semi-final included nine frees, a 65 and a sideline cut. The challenge facing Larkin’s is a significant one.

Up until two years ago, Loughrea had managed only two county titles in their 130-year existence, but they are now bidding for three-in-a-row, with the ‘nearly men’ tag consigned to history.

Coincidentally, they have posted 1-15 in the last two finals, defeating Cappataggle (2024) and St Thomas’ by an aggregate of three points. The All-Ireland final defeat at the start of the year to Ballygunner will be fuelling this year’s quest, with strong second-half showings against Athenry and Craughwell ensuring their passage to the final.

The other county final takes place on Saturday where Carrick take on defending champions Cluainín Iomáint for the right to be crowned Leitrim champions for 2026.

The Munster quarter-final tie has a heavyweight feel to it as the champions of Cork and Clare lock horns at Páirc Uí Rinn.

Cork’s All-Ireland semi-final collapse to Galway has had direct implications for Glen Rovers. The past two seasons have seen Rebel representatives progress directly to the Munster club semi-finals on foot of Cork’s successive All-Ireland final appearances, but this time around they face a quarter-final tie against an Inagh-Kilnimona side brimming with confidence from their own county success.

"David

David Fitzgerald will be a key figure for Inagh in attack

County stars such as David Fitzgerald, Aidan McCarthy and Seán Rynne, and former Clare goalkeeper Eamonn Foudy propelled the club to their first Clare title in more than a century.

The Glen last annexed in Munster in 1977, the year they went on to win their second All-Ireland in four years. For a side with 28 county titles, it is a return they would like to improve on, with veteran Patrick Horgan leading the charge for the city club.

The game is taking place in the tighter confines of Páirc Uí Rinn with Páirc Uí Chaoimh hosting five finals across the weekend.

FOOTBALL

While it’s something they would have gladly taken at the start of the campaign, it’s a demanding schedule for Edendork following the highs of last weekend to be straight back into action six days later.

After rescuing a draw against Errigal Ciarán in the Tyrone county final with a late Darren McCurry two-pointer, it was inter-county team-mate Niall Morgan who was the hero of the hour in the replay, nailing his long-range free to spark an outpouring of emotion at Healy Park.

How much the celebrations and emotional toll will take after a maiden county success won’t become clear until Sunday afternoon, though they are facing a Clonduff side that is also bouncing into the first round of Ulster with a pep in the step.

Burren did the heavy lifting in Down, ending Kilcoo’s reign of 13 out of the last 14 county finals when they beat the Magpies in the semi-final, but never really got going in a cagey county decider.

Clonduff led by five at the interval, a fair reflection on their dominance, and from there on never looked in danger of losing. Páirc Esler turned into a sea of yellow – the club are known as the Yellas – as they claimed a first Down championship in 26 years.

"Clonduff

Clonduff players celebrate their Down title success

They return to the same venue on Sunday after a three-week lay-off and odds-on favourites to end Edendork’s journey into unknown territory.

Eamon Brown, player of the match for the Yellas last time out, will carry the burden of responsibility in front of the posts, with Charlie Carr serving notice of his threat in front of goals.

The Tyrone champions have been dealt a blow with the loss of Neil Kilpatrick, younger brother of Tyrone star Conn, who made a 14,320-mile round trip from Doha in Qatar in order to feature last weekend. Manager Brian McGuckin hasn’t ruled him out of returning again should the club progress further.

At opposite ends of the pitch, McCurry and Morgan will carry the hopes of adding another chapter to their 2026 story. McCurry’s haul of 1-29 meant he took the Forbes Cup as the top scorer in Tyrone, while Morgan’s interview after the dramatic finish last weekend suggested that focusing on Ulster could be a tall order.

"23

Morgan is held high after defeating Errigal Ciarán in a county final replay

“This is the pinnacle of my career,” he said in the aftermath of his match-winning free. “I’ve won an All-Ireland, two All-Stars. This is it, this is as good as it gets. It’s never going to get better than this.”

In Leinster, four-in-a-row Offaly champions Tullamore have it all to do to halt a rampaging Cuala side with eyes on a second All-Ireland title in two years. Brushing aside Castleknock by 15 points sent out a warning, with stalwarts Con O’Callaghan and Mick Fitzsimons assisted by a growing cast, with Charlie McMorrow especially to the fore in their county-winning campaign.

After the first successful defence of their Westmeath title since 1970, the Downs are strongly fancied to overcome a Clonguish side that has had a fortnight to go again after a first Longford title since 2009.

The other Leinster outing appears to have little to choose between the sides.

Newtown Blues, who broke St Mochta hearts in the Louth decider with All-Star nominee Ciarán Downey (pictured below) firing over the winner with the last kick of the game, make the journey to Wexford Park.

"Ciaran

Kilanerin return to the venue where two weeks ago they claimed county glory with five of their starting forwards getting on the scoresheet. A week’s extra rest (with the Louth final going toa replay) and home advantage makes it a difficult one to call.

There are two county finals taking place. In Kildare it’s being described by many within the county as David (Maynooth) versus Goliath (Sarsfields) in Newbridge.

You have to go back to 1916 for the last time Maynooth graced the big occasion, taking a number of scalps on the way. After dethroning Athy in the quarter-finals, they required extra-time as well at the penultimate stage in denying Naas a sixth successive final appearance.

Sarsfields meanwhile are looking to claim the Dermot Bourke Cup for the first time since 2021.

"Dublin

Hayes was part of the Kildimo team that won a Junior A title in 2018

In Limerick, five-time Liam MacCarthy winner Kyle Hayes’ attention will be on big ball matters at Mick Neville Park as first-time finalists Kildimo-Pallaskenry look to get the better of a Fr Casey’s side looking to end a 20-year wait for a county title.

The 28-year-old has been in sparking form, ending Mungret St Pauls’ defence last time out. Hayes was instrumental from midfield, while experienced county footballers Peter Nash and Tony McCarthy

It’s just 12 years since they won the Junior B Football Championship, and enter Sunday’s contest as rank outsiders.

FOOTBALL Saturday Ulster SFC 1815 Edendork (Tyrone) v Clonduff (Down), Pairc Esler Sunday1500 Kildare SFC final, Maynooth v…

[9
61,60,112
post-669293","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-sports
["GET
