Throughout the season, the witches have been doing everything in their power to defeat young Mr. Nas (aka Satan, played by Paul Anthony Kelly). Following last week’s major revelations that Ben (Joey Pollari) is Satan’s son and that Constance Langdon and Fiona Goode (both played by Jessica Lange) are twin sisters and daughters of Satan and Sister Jude (also played by Lange), the stakes reach their highest point in Thursday’s finale.

In the concluding episode, young Mr. Nas kills his medical specialist, Mr. Phibes (John Waters), as well as the older version of himself. Meanwhile, Fiona introduces Constance to the basics of witchcraft, hinting at her potential place within the Coven. Ben and Madison’s (Emma Roberts) romance also takes an unexpected turn when, immediately after the two have sex, Madison becomes pregnant and gives birth to their daughter. When the newborn appears to be dead, young Mr. Nas brings the baby back to life.

But the witches aren’t done fighting. After Mallory (Billie Lourd) travels through time once again, she and Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) realize what they must do to save the world: convince Ben to sacrifice himself. Ben ultimately agrees and stabs himself in the heart with a sword, turning to ashes and defeating Satan. Young Mr. Nas is left trapped inside The Last Supper painting — a fate Constance foreshadowed during her first meeting with Ben in the season premiere.

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Kelly about playing the central villain of AHS: 13, working alongside Lange, his character’s fate and whether he’d be interested in returning — or thinks Mr. Nas could return — for the already-renewed 14th season of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s series.

***

When you first signed on for the season, did you know what your character’s ending would be, or when did you find out?

Oh, boy. I didn’t really know anything about how the season would go. They were writing it as we went along. I think there were maybe five episodes when I started, and there are 13 episodes in the season, so things change, things go and just play along.

Have you watched the finale yet?

I have not.

Have you been watching the season as it’s been airing? Are you going to be watching the finale live?

I have not. No, I’m currently filming The Housemaid’s Secret. [As far as the finale], perhaps. I don’t know. I’m pretty busy at home with the baby, so my TV time doesn’t really exist anymore. I get to work on TV but not watch it. (Laughs.)

What was Satan’s ultimate plan for Ben?

I think that he would have been the second in command. You know, definitely try to lure him into the family business, as it were.

What was your reaction to Ben sacrificing himself to defeat you?

Well, I was flabbergasted. (Laughs.) I’m very unimpressed. Very disappointed in his choices.

At the premiere, you told me your character had some good. In the finale, we see him show mercy to one of the men in the opening scene, and later to a dog. Then he saves Madison and Ben’s child. Is that what you meant? What good did you see?

Yeah, that’s it. He decides to call it all off to end the great game; he saves a few people along the way.

Why did he allow the Coven to get so close to defeating him?

Well, Sarah Paulson’s character is his grandchild, so you know, it’s a familial thing.

Could you explain the final scene with John Waters’ character? Is that just him back in hell?

Yes, absolutely. Condemned him to hell, but he got everything he ever wanted. You know, he wanted to. His desire was to make that biker movie. Now he’s stuck making it for eternity, and I think he loves it.

In American Horror Story, there are a lot of twists; we see characters come back, and just because they die doesn’t mean they’re necessarily dead. But this ending felt pretty final. What did it feel like for you? Is he ready dead or back in hell?

Stuck in the painting for all eternity. (Laughs.) I think maybe it’s more of a purgatory situation. I mean, he’s stuck in the painting, being overwatched by the Coven. For as long as he’s stuck in there, who’s to say? Maybe season 18 will be the rise of young Mr. Nas again.

Were you told your character’s fate? Do you know a true answer on that?

Nope. I don’t think anybody knows a true answer on that. It needs to be written.

Constance obviously made a lot of deals with your character. What do you think ultimately happens to her?

That’s a good question. I don’t know.

You filmed with so much of AHS royalty. What was your favorite or most memorable scene to film this season?

Tango dancing with Jessica Lange. That was definitely a high point for me.

Jessica Lange as Constance Langdon and Paul Anthony Kelly as Young Mr. Nas in FX’s American Horror Story 13.

          Eric Liebowitz/FX

What was it like filming some of the death scenes where your character has to kill people?

It was a lot of fun. I mean, the prosthetic work was incredible. The effects, the blood splattering — especially when my character, young Mr. Nas, has to kill the old version of Mr. Nas — got gory. There was a lot of that black goo; it got everywhere. It was actually a little bit of a mishap and sprayed me down. It wasn’t supposed to, but it was a lot of fun. (Laughs.)

This is also your first season in the franchise. Was there anyone in the cast who took you under their wing?

I spent a lot of time with Jessica Lange, which is really incredible. She’s amazing. Sarah Paulson and I are friends now. It was a great experience. I got to be around legendary actors, try to glean some things from them and have fun doing it.

Were you a fan of the franchise before?

Yeah. The first couple seasons were really stellar, and then I kind of fell off [watching it], to be honest.

Which one is your favorite?

Honestly, I really like Freak Show. Freak Show is so fun.

Could you see your character coming back for a future season of AHS?

Yeah, I could. (Laughs.) Who knows with Ryan Murphy? He’s always bringing things back and new twists and tales. It’s very possible.

The 14th season has been renewed. What have you heard about that? Are you hoping to return?

If I get the call, then yeah, I would seriously consider it. Yeah, but I have no idea. Who knows what’s in store.

This is your first time working in the horror genre as well. Is that a genre that you hope to continue in?

I would love to. Yeah, I am a fan of horror.

***

All episodes of FX’s American Horror Story: 13 are now streaming on Hulu.
