Brucellosis: 875 Hospital Diagnoses and an Open Question About Underdiagnosis<\/p>\n
A poster presented at IDWeek 2026 analyzed National Inpatient Sample data covering about 147 million US admissions from 2017 to 2020 and identified 875 adults with a diagnosis of brucellosis, roughly 0.6 per 100,000 admissions. Odds were higher among Hispanic patients and in the South and West.<\/p>\n
The authors noted it is unclear whether brucellosis is underdiagnosed in the US. The findings are associations, not population estimates, but they reinforce the value of a thorough exposure history, including animal contact and unpasteurized dairy.<\/p>\n
Ghana Blood Donor Study Finds Reactive Screening Markers in 18.3%<\/p>\n
Also from IDWeek 2026, a retrospective study of replacement blood donors at a rural hospital in Ghana found that 954 of 5,210 complete records (18.3%) had at least 1reactive marker. Treponemal screening was most common (8.1%), followed by hepatitis C (5.7%), hepatitis B (4.6%), and HIV (1.5%). Reactivity peaked at 26.4% in 2022. As a single-center study without a comparison group, it should not be read as community prevalence, but it highlights the need for confirmatory testing and linkage to care.<\/p>\n
Long-Acting HIV Antibodies Advance Toward Phase 2b Data<\/p>\n
TaiMed Biologics CEO Jimmy Chang, PhD, discussed investigational antibodies TMB-365 and TMB-380 at IDWeek 2026. A phase 1 study of TMB-365 in 25 people reported only mild or moderate adverse events, supporting evaluation of 8- to 12-week dosing, and a 24-week phase 2a study reported no virologic failures among completers. A 48-week phase 2b trial in 83 adults with suppression is ongoing, and efficacy has not yet been established.<\/p>\n
