The \u200cNasdaq opened at its \u200clowest level in more than two \u200bmonths on Friday, after Amazon\u2019s aggressive artificial intelligence (AI) spending \u200bplan and Intel\u2019s \u2060cash burn warning intensified \u200cinvestor concerns \u200cabout \u200bescalating costs of AI \u2060infrastructure \u200bbuildout and the \u200breturn timeline.<\/p>\n
The Dow \u200cJones Industrial Average \u200brose 0.08 per cent. The S&P 500 rose 1.16 per cent, while \u2060the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.26 per cent.<\/p>\n
Before trading even began, the big names in tech were all plummeting down the index.<\/p>\n
Intel \u200ctumbled 25 per cent in premarket trading on a bleak outlook, deepening a broader retreat in technology stocks as investors grew increasingly \u200cwary of weakening PC demand and the vast spending required to build out AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The forecast underscores the challenges facing \u200bchief executive Lip-Bu Tan\u2019s turnaround effort, with Intel still grappling with a prolonged PC market slump even as it invests heavily in AI and manufacturing expansion.<\/p>\n
Semiconductor stocks, including Advanced Micro Devices, Arm Holdings, Qualcomm, Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron, fell between 2 per cent and 9 per cent \u200bin premarket trading.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe market is in a sell first, ask questions later mood right now, and Intel\u2019s warning has given \u2060investors an easy excuse to take some money off the table across chip stocks,\u201d said Matt \u200cBritzman, \u200csenior \u200bequity analyst, Hargreaves Lansdown.<\/p>\n
The sell-off spread to server makers, reflecting investor caution towards companies tied to the semiconductor and AI infrastructure supply chain.<\/p>\n
Shares of server makers \u2060Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Super \u200bMicro Computer fell between 6 per cent and 12 per cent in \u200bpre-market trading. \u2013 Reuters<\/p>\n
