Taking inspiration from artists such as Hank Williams, Uncle Tupelo and Nirvana, they have opened for the likes of the Frank & Walters, the Riptide Movement and Hermitage Green and have appeared at the Red Rooster Festival and Ramblin’ Roots Revue in the UK and Static Roots in Germany.

They play Saturday, 21st of November at the Set Theatre, Kilkenny, supporting the Frank & Walters.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Hi! I’m Emlyn Holden, I’m the songwriter, singer and guitar player with the Southern Fold.

I’m from Kilkenny.

I’m left-handed.

I was born on May the fourth (be with you!).

How would you describe your music?

We’ve been called Dark Country and I really like that term. We’re definitely somewhere in the alt. folk/alt. Country field. There’s country, blues and gospel influences. I guess that means you could also probably just call it rock ‘n’ roll!

Who are your musical inspirations?

Hank Williams, Nirvana, Wilco/Uncle Tupelo, Elvis Presley, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Gram Parsons and The Replacements come to mind. Anything I listen to and like.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Foo Fighters at the SFX in Dublin back in the good old days.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I think it might have been the Complete Sun Sessions by Elvis Presley.

What’s your favourite song right now?

There’s this beautiful song called The Bullfighter by Luke Bell. He was an amazing songwriter and singer who was probably about to be very successful about 10 to 15 years ago. But he suffered terribly with his mental health and he gave up his music career and died alone of a fentanyl OD on the streets of Tucson, Arizona.

Favourite lyric of all time?

“True love will find you in the end, You’ll find out just who was your friend, Don’t be sad, I know you will, But don’t give up until, true love will find you in the end” – Beautiful words from the beautiful soul of Daniel Johnston.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

That’s a really tough question! I could listen to Kodachrome by Paul Simon every day forever.

Where can people find your music/more information?

You can find our music digitally online at all the usual Spotify type places. The best place to buy our music physically is directly from us at our Bandcamp and we would very much appreciate it! We’re on Instagram and Facebook and our website.

Alan Corr

Kilkenny band The Southern Fold have released their new album, Beneath the Blaze of the Burning Sun.
