Wetherby 13:10 \u2013 Koukeo<\/a><\/p>\n I did not really like those at the top of the market and found myself rooting around for something to make a case for \u2013 in the end, I came down on the side of KOUKEO, whose two wins have come on good ground. He has never run on good-to-firm ground, which could help him improve a bit.<\/p>\n A good each-way pick in what I expect to be an open race, Koukeo had a run at Fontwell on the 15th of October, so he should have a fitness edge over some of his rivals. Both John Jones and AG O\u2019Neill seem to be in decent form too.<\/p>\n At the entry stage, this race had the makings of a really competitive contest, but with the quicker ground at declaration stages, it has cut up considerably, making JET TO VEGAS the likely winner.<\/p>\n He ran well at Ascot last November behind Thomas Mor in a novice Chase and won well at Market Rasen in September. Brian Hughes rode on that occasion, but Lucas Murphy is well worth his 7lb as well \u2013 he could have a good day at Ascot.<\/p>\n Kateira is a justified favourite. She won the race last year when she beat Golden Ace, though there were only two runners. I suppose that reads as very strong form, but at the current prices, I wonder if she is worth taking on.<\/p>\n I think the Skeltons will have winners in Wetherby on Saturday, but LA CONQUIERE for Gavin Sheehan and Jamie Snowden was good this time last year when she won at Uttoxeter and then bolted up at Newbury next time out when she beat Charisma Cat with Jaminska and Whimsy third and fourth.<\/p>\n She was entitled to win that day and did not achieve what they hoped she would after that. She was beaten by Ooh Betty at Ascot and disappointed at Cheltenham, but at this time of year, on this ground, La Conquiere could give Kateira a run.<\/p>\n I am against the three horses that have won this race in the past and taking AEROS LUCK for Lucas Murphy and Sandy Thompson. Formerly trained by Gavin Cromwell, he has had a couple of wind surgeries since he went to the UK, and his run at Kelso in early October was his first back after a second wind operation.<\/p>\n I think he will have come forward for that as Sandy\u2019s horses do look like they are improving for a run. It might be his day to land a good pot.<\/p>\n At times last year, races set up for Strong Leader where you thought \u2018today will be his day,\u2019 but, for whatever reason, he did not spark. He had another wind operation, his second one, before Aintree earlier this year and I am going to take him on in this.<\/p>\n From the rest of this field, Paganne has been off the track, apart from a run on the flat, after being injured last year, and Lavida Adiva has plenty to find, so TAKE NO CHANCES looks the one to beat him.<\/p>\n Your Darling needed a run last year and progressed from there to deliver. With a run or two under his belt for Ben Pauling, there is another race in him. Califet En Vol ran respectably enough at Cheltenham last week, but I am not sure about him.<\/p>\n In my view, VIROFLAY is the one to beat. He is fit, on a respectable mark of 144. He won off 140 at Newton Abbot back in May. He had disappointed prior to that at Aintree in the John Hughes, but this is down in grade from that, so he could cap a big day for Lucas Murphy.<\/p>\n Wetherby 14:55 \u2013 Pic DOrhy<\/a><\/p>\n The bookies\u2019 favourite as well as my selection, PIC D\u2019OHRY has an official rating of 162, which is pretty good. He does not have a penalty here, whereas Hitman does and is rated 152, 10lb lower, and that could be vital. Though the selection is 11 years old now, the risk of a loss is lower than it might be, as I do not think it is the strongest renewal I have ever seen of a Charlie Hall.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, I suppose The Real Whacker does have the fitness edge after winning at Perth. Handstands has the age profile even if he\u2019s been off the track for quite a while, and he may need his first run back on this kind of ground.<\/p>\n Down Royal 15:15 \u2013 Banbridge<\/a><\/p>\n This is a decent contest. Again, the official going is yielding. I will be surprised if it is as slow as that. I think it will be on the drier side.<\/p>\n The horse I like at the prices is BANBRIDGE. I thought he was good at Gowran Park when he won a flat maiden. He has that run under his belt and has won and been placed in King Georges.<\/p>\n Down Royal is not flat like Kempton, but it does tend to ride like a faster track. It is speed-orientated more so than stamina. Three fences down the straight will suit him. And as long as the ground is no worse than yielding, Banbridge represents the value.<\/p>\n RACE TO BASE\u2019s last run at Sandown was a solid one, and if he has improved through the summer, he will be too good for the opposition. Age-wise, Filibustering of Harry Derham\u2019s is the other horse that is probably open to improvement, but he looks exposed.<\/p>\n He has had some wins but was well beaten at Perth and Chepstow on his last start, so it is hard to say he is progressing. Klitschko is an 8-year-old, and Banderas, while only a 6-year-old, is the outsider of the four.<\/p>\n Open to improvement as a five-year-old, my selection TRUSTINTIMES is a course-and-distance winner from last November.<\/p>\n He then ran behind Williethebuilder at Kempton at Christmas time. He was off then until he disappointed at Aintree but had a warm-up for this at Nottingham just over a fortnight ago. Bryan Carver rides for Harry Fry.
