Understanding why reveals exactly what could unravel before the next major debt sale on November 4.

The U.S. Treasury sold $839 billion of debt across 11 auctions from October 26 to October 29, 2026. That set a record for a single week, just above the prior high of $834 billion set during the same period a year earlier.

That much supply would normally push long bond prices lower. Instead, the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:TLT) rose 0.43% to $81.84 on October 30, 2026. It gained about 0.6% from $81.34 on October 23.

The 10-year Treasury par yield fell to 4.94% on October 30, down from 5.05% on October 28. The mix of what Treasury sold explains why, and the next test is the November 4, 2026 refunding.

Why $839 Billion Overstates New Borrowing

Most of the week’s sales paid off holders of maturing bills. Only $106 billion was new money, far below the weekly record for new cash of nearly $362 billion, set in March and April 2020.

The gross record keeps getting broken because the stock of outstanding bills keeps growing, so more rolls over every week. Several of these auctions settle on November 2 and 3, which means the record counts auction week rather than settled cash.

Total federal debt was $40,593,637,262,883 on October 29, 2026. A year earlier, it was $38.08 trillion, a smaller base to roll over.

Treasury Relies Heavily on Bills

Bills made up $626 billion of the total, about 75%. The 2-, 5-, and 7-year notes plus a floating-rate note made up the other $213 billion.

Security
Amount
Result (bills: high discount rate; notes: high yield)

4-week bill
$115 billion
3.910%

6-week bill
$95 billion
3.950%

8-week bill
$110 billion
4.020%

13-week bill
$95 billion
4.050%

17-week bill
$75 billion
4.140%

26-week bill
$82 billion
4.210%

52-week bill
$54 billion
4.290%

2-year note
$69 billion
4.708%

5-year note
$70 billion
4.845%

7-year note
$44 billion
4.894%

2-year floater
$30 billion
0.038% discount margin

Borrowing at the short end keeps new supply away from the long bonds TLT holds. But bills reprice within weeks, so if the Fed hikes again after raising its upper bound to 4.00% on September 17, 2026, the government’s interest costs rise quickly. That limits how long Treasury can put off bigger coupon auctions.

Coupon Buyers Still Showed Up

Bid-to-cover measures how many dollars of bids arrived for each dollar sold. It came in at 2.59 for the 2-year, 2.33 for the 5-year, and 2.46 for the 7-year. Each note cleared slightly above its coupon of 4.625%, 4.750% and 4.875%, so buyers asked for only a small price discount.

The floater drew the strongest demand of the week at 3.05. That shows investors want debt whose rate resets with the market.

Long yields fell during a week of record supply, which suggests the amount of issuance is a secondary driver of long rates for now. The 30-year at 5.31% still sits above the 2-year at 4.56%, so investors still want extra yield to lock up money for longer.

Because TLT holds long-duration bonds, its price swings sharply when long yields move. The fund is down 2.82% year to date and 33.73% over five years.

What Could Move TLT After the November 4 Refunding

The outlook for TLT is mixed. Long-end yields above 5% and steady auction demand make a real case for long bonds, but the November 4 refunding could add long-dated supply when the Fed has shown it is still willing to hike.

Investors comparing duration exposure can research the iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF (NYSEARCA:SGOV), which holds the short bills the Treasury is selling in volume. On October 26, the 13-week bill cleared at a 4.050% high discount rate, and bill income rises quickly if the Fed hikes again, with very little duration risk.

TLT would likely hold up better if the November 4 refunding leaves coupon sizes unchanged and the 10-year stays below 5.05%. If Treasury raises coupon sizes, TLT would likely slip back below its October 23 level of $81.34.

Contact [email protected] for any questions or corrections.

A single week of Treasury auctions just shattered a record, yet long bond prices moved in the opposite…

[11
72,113,61,60
post-671165","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-business","tag-economy","tag-ie","tag-ireland
["GET
