A firefighter was injured after rocks and other items were thrown at a truck while it was responding to an incident in Co Kildare.

The firefighter suffered cuts to their hand and arm from broken glass after a rock was thrown through the window of a fire truck as it responded to a blaze in an estate in Kildare town last night.

The Kildare Fire Service described an incident as “an attack on the very people who are there to protect communities”, while Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dermot Scully said that the fire appliance involved will need to been taken out of service for repair.

In a statement, the Kildare Fire Service said that when fire appliances are attacked, it may force crews to withdraw for their own safety.

“We ask communities to consider that the next emergency call could be to your home, your family or someone you love,” the statement read.

“As we prepare for what is traditionally one of the busiest nights of the year for our fire crews, we are appealing to everyone across County Kildare to enjoy Halloween safely and responsibly.

“We know that the overwhelming majority of people in our communities respect and support our firefighters, and we are grateful for that continued support. Sadly, the reckless actions of a small minority can have serious consequences for everyone.

“To parents, guardians and young people – please be mindful of the dangers associated with bonfires, fireworks and anti-social behaviour.
