The chorus of its birdsong, the crash of its waves in hidden coves, the serene silence of its woodland.

Ireland is a sensory experience, and we have found immersing ourselves in nature with a cabin stay — whether by a lake, in a forest or hidden in a quiet corner of a country estate — is one of the most magical ways to connect with the Irish landscape.

The desire to retreat somewhere rural and remote is no surprise, as travel tends to have pivoted towards more immersive, restorative and slow travel experiences. The anti-city break, really, where busy airports, packed itineraries and bus tours are replaced with quiet, off-grid escapes and almost meditative staycations.

The cabin stay provides not only a retreat but a total reset – all wild walks, sauna sessions and lake dips, cosy blankets, firelight and old-school board games.

Here are seven of Ireland’s best to get you started…

Birch Cabins, Co. Down

A 30-minute drive outside Belfast, Birch Cabins is a neat little cluster of eight contemporary, blackened timber cabins, each with private, wood-fired hot tubs. Set between lake and forest on the 200-acre Florida Manor, each cabin has a raised, glass-backed balcony to the rear with views of the forest. A particularly tranquil little spot for morning coffee soundtracked by birdsong.

Birch Cabins roots you within nature without compromising on the little luxuries, like Smart TVs, Wi-Fi, soft, luxurious linens, ample storage space and a well-equipped kitchenette. Four of the eight cabins are dog-friendly, too.

If you plan to explore more of the local landscape, you can hike in the Mournes, kayak on Strangford Lough and stroll around one of the area’s National Trust properties. Don’t miss The Poacher’s Pocket in nearby Lisbane for breakfast, lunch or dinner, while its well-stocked pantry is ideal for picking up provisions before settling in and switching off from the outside world.

Cucu, Co. Westmeath

A definite contender for the most unusual, bold and striking cabin in Ireland. This compact, crimson-coloured bolthole sits within the 350-acre Ballinlough Castle grounds in Westmeath and is a design lover’s dream. Samsú is a collective of cabins, cottages and other unique stays dotted around Ireland but Cucu is the most bold of the lot.

Designed by Brooklyn-based Irish architect Alexander Buckeridge (Studio Bucky), at just 20 square metres it’s tiny, designed with solo travellers and couples in mind, but employs height and light cleverly with a mezzanine level and a large feature window. Like a colourful cocoon from the world outside, what it lacks in size it makes up for in personality.

Samsú founder Rosanna Irwin designed these unique, off-grid cabin stays to help people properly disconnect from digital life and reconnect with the natural world. Phones are encouraged into lockboxes as you arrive (an old Nokia is supplied for emergencies), WiFi is non-existent, a film camera is loaded and ready for cute analogue snaps, and board games, cassettes and books line the shelves.

The kitchen is small but perfectly formed for short stays. Outside, find a fire pit, copper roll-top bath, endless woodland walks and a complimentary three-hour session in the forest sauna.

On a recent spring stay we took afternoon naps with the windows wide open while a cassette played softly; picked some wild garlic that blanketed huge swathes of the land and ate it with every meal; took freshly-brewed coffee on an early morning walk; and played Scrabble by the stove while rain bucketed down outside. Pure bliss, making it hard to return to the rat race.

The Cabin Under The Hills, Co. Waterford

Cabin stays run the gamut from off-grid and eco-conscious to mod cons and plush comfort. The Cabin Under The Hills is firmly in the former, all solar panels, grey water, compost toilets and reclaimed materials, but with an incredibly considered, designer approach to every detail.

Set on the sprawling grounds of Cappoquin Estate in west Waterford are a pair of Appalachian-style cabins, with timber frames, corrugated metal and peak roofs, designed by award-winning architects Studio McLeod, with a third soon to follow.

Located a few fields apart, the two cabins offer total privacy and seclusion, each with its own aspect and views over the Blackwater and the Knockmealdowns. The fire pit outside is a particularly lovely, rustic touch, with the tools provided if you fancy cooking the old-fashioned way over an open flame.

A recent addition has been the treetop wood-fired sauna, from the same designers, with a panoramic window framing a forest view as you unwind in the heat and then refresh with a plunge in a repurposed cattle trough.

The Botháns, Co. Derry

When you want an escape that feels more like a home from home, The Botháns fits the bill. A neat little pair of secluded, hillside cabins with sweeping views over Lough Foyle, it’s the little personal touches that make these stays stand out: freshly baked sourdough, homemade granola and a s’mores kit are waiting for guests on arrival, alongside the kitchen staples of milk, tea and coffee.

The interiors are eclectic, considered and cosy, while a wood-burning stove and a projector make movie nights a must here — we stayed on a cold January night when snow was falling, which was extra magical. On the porch outside each cabin, Swedish wood-fired Hikki Bohemen baths offer a gorgeous opportunity to soak under the stars.

Optional extras add another layer of boujieness, from a Little Deli Company cheese and charcuterie box with a bottle of bubbles to a firepit supper box, made in collaboration with recipe content creator @BigDaddySlims. You can even book a 60-minute massage or facial in the privacy of your cabin with Emma from EB Beauty Therapy.

Mount Congreve Forest Cabins, Co. Waterford

Mount Congreve Estate and Gardens is the slice of bucolic paradise you’ve probably never heard of, if you’re not from Waterford.

A Palladian pile just outside the town of Kilmeaden overlooking the River Suir, with the Waterford Greenway running right along the estate’s edge, the historic Georgian mansion, meticulously kept botanical gardens, and Stables Cafe are worthy of a day trip alone. But you can also stay overnight on the 140-acre site.

Mount Congreve’s striking forest cabins are unmissable in their striking blackened timber with armadillo shingles, curved roofs and big, arched windows. Expect the finest of forest-side luxuries: a private hot tub, Foxford linens, underfloor heating, WiFi and complimentary use of Elops bikes to explore the vast estate on two wheels.

These cabins come in either couples occupancy or at a slightly larger footprint for families, while several other accommodation options are found across the estate, from courtyard suites in private wings of the house to opulently designed gate lodges, perfect for long weekends or more lingering stays.

Fernwood, Co. Galway

A woodland hideaway in Connemara that feels a world apart, yet just a 15-minute walk from Clifden. Set on a 150-acre organic farm, complete with native woodland, bogland and a natural salt lake, Fernwood Eco offers a trio of accommodation options, all united by the luxury of simplicity, but it’s the Stilt House that’s the architectural jewel, like an ethereal woodland honeymoon suite.

Elevated above the forest floor like a modern treehouse, supported by more than 50 slender stilts, this ambitious, elliptical, 45 square-metre cabin is designed to immerse you entirely in nature. It blends into its surroundings, while floor-to-ceiling windows bridge the gap between inside and out.

Expect a luxurious king-size bed, curated Scandi-style interiors, a Bang & Olufsen speaker, a wood-burning stove and, outside, a private, wood-fired Swedish hot tub plus a lakeside sauna hidden down a woodland path.

Elsewhere to stay on the farm is a glamping-style geodesic dome perched within the forest canopy and a traditional stone bothy. If you fancy reconnecting with the real world, the colourful shops and bustling pubs of Clifden are within easy reach.

Cabü, Co. Cavan

Where many of the other cabins on this list are singular entities or in hidden clusters, Cabü is quite the opposite: a self-contained community. A remote retreat which brings together lakeside activities, forest walks and is anchored by a central spa, bar and provisions store, Cabü can be as sociable or as singular as you like.

Set on Lough Oughter within Killykeen Forest Park in Cavan, this 100-acre hideaway brings together a collection of smaller lake, loft and log cabins dotted amidst the trees and larger barn houses and boat houses for bigger groups.

Regardless of the size of cabin, the kitchens come impressively equipped for self-catering stays; books and games are provided for entertainment, alongside TVs and WiFi, and a number are furnished with barbecues on balconies. While designed for adults, children and dogs are welcome to stay, too.

At the heart of the woodland campus is the Sitooterie, a covered al fresco hangout, complete with cosy, fur-draped lounge chairs, a wood-burning stove, grill tables and interactive games, like giant Jenga and Connect Four. Another major draw is the Nature Spa, where treatments are available alongside a selection of hot tubs, saunas and cold plunges, all set within the woodland bathing area.

The Gastro Gays share seven cosy cabin stays available in Ireland this winter.
