\n\tJohnny Depp<\/a> is finally sounding off about the possibility of returning as Jack Sparrow<\/a> in \u201cPirates of the Caribbean<\/a> 6.\u201d Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on his \u201cEbenezer\u201d press tour, the Oscar nominee stopped short of confirming he will put the pirate costume on once more. Instead, Depp said he would never turn down a request from friend and franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the \u2018Pirates\u2019 franchise\u2026 the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note,\u201d Depp said when asked about being involved with the next installment in the franchise. \u201cI will go to work with [Jerry] Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn\u2019t matter\u2026 if it\u2019s Jerry, i trust him. We have a deep friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBruckheimer confirmed to Entertainment Weekly<\/a> in summer 2025 that he had spoken to Depp about a new \u201cPirates\u201d movie. The producer felt optimistic at the time that Jack Sparrow could return, saying: \u201cIf he likes the way the part\u2019s written, I think he would do it. It\u2019s all about what\u2019s on the page, as we all know\u2026 We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven\u2019t quite gotten there yet, but we\u2019re close.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDepp headlined five \u201cPirates\u201d movies from 2003 to 2017, all of which grossed more than $650 million at the worldwide box office. 2006\u2019s \u201cDead Man\u2019s Chest\u201d and 2011\u2019s \u201cOn Stranger Tides\u201d both topped the $1 billion mark. His future with the Disney-backed series has been a question mark since his legal troubles and his 2022 libel trial against Amber Heard, although he\u2019s mounting his Hollywood comeback this month with the Paramount-backed holiday movie \u201cEbenezer.\u201d With Depp front and center, the \u201cPirates\u201d movies have collectively grossed $4.5 billion.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe road to a sixth \u201cPirates\u201d movie has been a long one, with Variety reporting in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on two \u201cPirates\u201d movies: A reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film in the original franchise. Robbie revealed to Vanity Fair<\/a> in November 2022 that Disney was not interested in her \u201cmore of a female-led\u201d movie. Meanwhile, Bruckheimer told EW<\/a> in summer 2024 that screenwriter Jeff Nathanson (2017\u2019s \u201cDead Men Tell No Tales\u201d) had boarded the proper \u201cPirates 6.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s cracked it,\u201d Bruckheimer said at the time of Nathanson\u2019s script. \u201cHe\u2019s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we\u2019ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBruckheimer said around the same time<\/a> that he would be open to bringing Depp back for the Nathanson-penned movie, explaining: \u201cIt\u2019s a reboot, but if it was up to me, [Johnny] would be in it. I love him. He\u2019s a good friend. He\u2019s an amazing artist and he\u2019s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page, that was him doing a little Pep\u00e9 Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDepp\u2019s last Hollywood studio movie was 2018\u2019s \u201cFantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,\u201d although he now has two upcoming ones thanks to \u201cEbenzer\u201d and Lionsgate\u2019s 2028 thriller \u201cDay Drinker.\u201d Warner Bros. asked Depp to exit \u201cFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore\u201d after he lost his 2020 libel trial against The Sun. The actor sued the U.K. publication for referring to him as a \u201cwife beater,\u201d but the court ruled this characterization of Depp was \u201csubstantially true.\u201d Depp was eventually recast in the sequel with Mads Mikkelsen.<\/p>\n

\n\tA second trial centered on Depp took place in the U.S. in 2022 after Depp sued ex-wife Amber Heard for defamation over an op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post in which she referred to herself as \u201ca figure representing domestic abuse.\u201d The outcome of this trial was more in Depp\u2019s favor, as the jury ultimately ruled<\/a> that Heard did defame Depp in the op-ed (although the jury also ruled that Depp defamed Heard in the course of fighting back against her charges).<\/p>\n
