A scrappy moment between the Glen and Inagh Kilnamona at Páirc Uí Rinn. Picture: Noel Sweeney

While Glen Rovers can mark 2026 as a major success, the way Inagh-Kilnamona dictated their Munster quarter-final will irritate the Blackpool men.

Compared to the visitors’ frantic pace, helped by an extra week’s rest, the Glen weren’t at the races from the off.

Conner Hegarty, fit again after missing the Clare final through injury, showed his hunger for the fight with an instant hook on Robert Downey. They cashed that in for an Aidan McCarthy point. In the very first play, their danger man was up and running.

Seán Rynne’s exit for his bloodied forehead to be patched up only served to symbolise their full-blooded approach.

In the second play, Inagh’s pressure earned a second block, with Darren Cullinan all over a Dean Brosnan pass.

That would still result in the Glen’s only shot of the opening 12 minutes as Patrick Horgan exchanged a sideline one-two with Michael Tadhg Brosnan.

Sideline cuts seemed the Glen’s best bet in that spell. Brosnan was again the link man as Luke Horgan worked one short, but a budding goal chance was snuffed out by James Hegarty. Their number six later smothered a potential Eoin Downey opening.

The first-time Clare champions set up with a deep-lying defensive shield, which the Glen couldn’t penetrate.

Patrick Horgan effectively lined out at centre-forward, but Keith White gave him no space. Conor Rynne did the job when Horgan moved closer to goal in the second half. In either scenario, the Glen couldn’t work the ball into Hoggie’s grasp.

In the first half especially, that was down to Hegarty patrolling the centre. In those formative stages, he mopped up the break for McCarthy’s second point, batted the puck-out to a teammate for McCarthy’s fourth, was all alone to collect for McCarthy’s seventh shot, a wide, and would’ve been credited with another interception only for a late clip on Luke Horgan, which resulted in the Glen’s second point.

TG4 put the half-time turnover count at 14-5.

While McCarthy has been doing his utmost to earn a Clare recall, Hegarty must be high on Brian Lohan’s radar for a centre-back position which proved a headache this year.

As for McCarthy, he dispatched seven shots in just 11 minutes. It didn’t help the Glen’s cause that his seventh point, in the 23rd minute, was a gift from a sideline cut. Positioned on the left wing for long stretches, he then won the puck-out for David Fitzgerald’s goal.

Across the hour, the 2024 All-Ireland winner had 17 attempts, converting 14. He got 11 of those attempts from frees, plus one 65, converting 10.

While Inagh-Kilnamona were tackling with greater intensity, the Glen gave up the first four fouls and had their first of two pointed frees marched forward for dissent as they got on the wrong side of a fussy Alan Tierney performance.

The Glen’s daring puck-out strategy came under extra heat as Fred Hegarty picked off one short restart for a point. When Conor McCarthy did win a puck-out break in opposition territory, he was swarmed, left short of options, and the pass didn’t go to hand.

Later, Mark Callinan came from 10 yards behind McCarthy to pull off a hook. Later again, the all-action midfielder blocked Dean Brosnan.

Robert Downey was blocked down again by David Mescall, but the Cork centre-back recovered well to charge down Kealan Guyler’s attempt.

Downey was detailed to track Fitzgerald, while younger brother Eoin initially tagged Aidan McCarthy. Their positioning made it difficult to cover the centre.

With the game turning against the hosts, Eoin shifted to the number six role and Robert later moved towards the middle as Eoin shoved further forward. Those tweaks harvested Glen momentum in the third quarter.

It wasn’t until then that the Glen put back-to-back scores together. Within 30 seconds of each first-half point, Inagh-Kilnamona had either responded in kind or won a free which would be pointed. The exception was their fifth and final point. After a brief delay, the next score was Fitzgerald’s goal.

Patrick Horgan’s 1-4 from frees either side of half-time, plus a sharp assist for Lee Quilligan, gave the Glen hope. One of those scores came from a Rhys Dunne block. Another originated from forward pressure to force the turnover.

Half-time substitute Zach Lynch could’ve made it a one-score game, but Éamonn Foudy was equal to his drive.

Micheál Mullins’ injury undoubtedly damaged the Glen’s chances. Where he came good in the semi-final with two goals, just like Eoin O’Leary did in the final, the Glen never got any forward traction. Quilligan was the only player to register two scores from play before his early withdrawal.

All the while, Inagh-Kilnamona didn’t drop their standards. When the Glen got it back to four points, the visitors came strong with the next three. The second half ended 0-7 apiece.

The wide count of 10-4 weighted towards Inagh underlined the dominant nature of their display.

While Glen Rovers can mark 2026 as a major success, the way Inagh-Kilnamona dictated their Munster quarter-final will…

[3
1965,1964,42,43,40,38,41,39
post-673432","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-hurling","tag-cork-gaa","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories
["GET
