US PRESIDENT DONALD Trump has delivered his first public remarks since the midterm results which dealt a major blow to his administration.<\/p>\n

Speaking from the construction site of the White House ballroom,<\/a> Trump initially did not reflect on the significant election results.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be not only one of the biggest, but it\u2019ll be the most beautiful ballroom I think anywhere in the world,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was in China, we went to the Great Hall and it\u2019s incredible. But this is actually larger. This is larger, and it will be the most magnificent when you see what we\u2019re doing between the marble and the bronze and all the different things that we\u2019re doing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump went on to talk at length about the six-hundred-million-dollar (\u20ac500.34 million) ballroom, and even signed his name on one of the beams at the construction site.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He eventually commented on the election results, saying twice, \u201cIf I were on the ballot, we would have won.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump noted the thousands of people present at Republican rallies and that \u201cthere was such love at those rallies, it was incredible\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe weren\u2019t able to transfer the love to candidates\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Trump acknowledged that the Iran war was the key factor in his party\u2019s sweeping midterm election losses, after Vice President JD Vance urged Republicans to be \u201chonest\u201d about the unpopular conflict\u2019s impact.<\/p>\n

Asked if he agreed with Vance\u2019s remark that the Iran war was \u201cthe reason we lost,\u201d Trump said: \u201cI think it\u2019s largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut at the same time, if I had it to do again, I\u2019d have to do it again. Because long-term, it\u2019s the only answer. You can\u2019t let Iran have a nuclear weapon,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Asked about prospective impeachment a day after his party suffered a sweeping midterm election loss, Trump said: \u201cI think it would destroy the Democratic Party if they did that,\u201d insisting there was \u201cno reason\u201d for him to be impeached.<\/p>\n

Trump also ruled out firing defence secretary Pete Hegseth despite the election losses which he blamed on the war against Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I think he\u2019s doing a very good job,\u201d Trump said when asked if he was considering replacing Hegseth, a staunch proponent of military action against the Islamic republic.<\/p>\n
