Over the course of two years, I went through a particularly protracted custody battle for my two girls. The whole experience took me to a dark place. I lost my appetite and stopped eating properly. I was in denial about how I was coping. It wasn’t until I went out in public for the first time to attend a funeral, and everyone commented on how thin I looked, that I realised I probably wasn’t okay. I went to the doctor for blood tests and, to my great shock and relief, everything came back fine – I was expecting the worst, so the news felt like being granted a second chance. I decided to get back to the gym and focus on my overall health moving forwards. Eventually, I started seeing a therapist, too.

Training helped pull me out of that darkness – it gave me focus and built my resilience. By late 2014, I was in peak shape, so I decided to sign up for Survival of the Fittest [Men’s Health’s former obstacle-course race series]. But in January 2015, I clearly overdid it at the gym and ended up with a hernia. That was tough – it felt like my fitness was the only thing I was in control of. During that time, I focused on conditioning work to build up my strength and fitness again.

How Dharmesh Patel Trains for Life-Long Strength

I initially got into the gym after having my first daughter 22 years ago. Unlike team sports, which usually require a weekly commitment, it’s something you can fit around your own timetable without letting anyone else down. Today, my routine follows a four-day cycle: legs and biceps, chest and triceps, back and shoulders, then core. Each session is usually broken down into four or five exercises, followed by a superset, then 15 minutes on the treadmill.

People are surprised when I tell them this, but I don’t programme days off into my routine any more – I just keep going until my body tells me it needs a rest. I know now what my body can tolerate and I’ve done a 60-day training streak before without any breaks. If you have the energy for it, then why not? I hate feeling like I’m wasting my time – I’ll do five supersets of press-ups and sit-ups to failure while I grill my meat for dinner, just to utilise that time.

Julian Benjamin

That mentality comes from knowing that I have to work hard to balance my time. I work on the railways and manage my own property portfolio, juggling 12-hour shifts across days, nights and weekends, usually clocking up about 70 hours a week. A lot of that is overtime, but it’s my choice. I’ve never taken my foot off the gas and tend to always say yes. But the one thing I always prioritise is my training. I’ll get up at 3am and be in the gym by 4am, which gives me a good 90 minutes before I start my shift at 6am. It sounds tiring, but last night, for example, I was in bed by 7pm, having had my last meal at 4pm.

While I have a social life, I only really manage to go out with my friends every other month. I’d rather have a night in with my girls when they are home from university. I don’t feel like I’m missing out as I don’t drink regularly. Because of my job I’m also very conscious of what I’m putting in my body. In fact, I only supplement my diet with protein shakes, vitamins and cod liver oil.

I tend to eat the same thing on repeat to help me stay lean and energised. I eat a lot of cottage cheese and boiled eggs, serving them with a salad, including things like spinach, tuna and sweetcorn. My main meal of the day will always be steamed veg, such as broccoli or kale, with either grilled chicken, turkey or some pork tenderloin. I don’t eat processed foods, saturated fats or sugar, and I drink five litres of water a day. However, if I’m invited out for a meal, I’ll consciously eat what I’m served and enjoy it because I know I’m disciplined enough the rest of the time.

Training is as automatic as brushing my teeth – it’s something I just do without question. There was a time when I thought I was going to lose everything and fitness was one of the things that got me through. I don’t take it for granted.

SQUAD Talk

Dharmesh answers our quick-fire questions…

The Food I Can’t Live Without

Eggs.
