{"id":676322,"date":"2026-11-06T02:42:12","date_gmt":"2026-11-06T02:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/676322\/"},"modified":"2026-11-06T02:42:12","modified_gmt":"2026-11-06T02:42:12","slug":"met-gala-announces-new-2027-theme-after-galliano-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/676322\/","title":{"rendered":"Met Gala announces new 2027 theme after Galliano controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK\u2019S METROPOLITAN Museum of Art has announced a new theme for next year\u2019s Met Gala, following controversy surrounding top designer John Galliano.<\/p>\n<p>The new exhibition, titled\u00a0extraORDINARY \u201cwill examine how design reveals unexpected possibilities within everyday things\u201d, the renowned New York museum said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Both the exhibition and the high-profile red carpet event that accompanies it will show how designers can transform ordinary materials into works of art.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Met Gala themes have celebrated some of fashion\u2019s most influential designers, from Alexander McQueen to Karl Lagerfeld.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s planned John Galliano retrospective was scrapped in August following backlash from donors and political figures over the designer\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/john-galliano-met-gala-exhibition-cancelled-antisemitism-7148077-Aug2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> past antisemitic remarks.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/1793932931_463_.jpeg\"  alt=\"gettyimages-2151817902-594x594\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            Galliano and Kim Kardashian attend The 2024 Met Gala Celebrating Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.                    Getty Images for The Met Museum<\/p>\n<p>    Getty Images for The Met Museum\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time,\u201d the 65-year-old wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A French court convicted Galliano in 2011 of making racist and antisemitic comments, after he hurled Jewish and Asian slurs at a Paris bar.<\/p>\n<p>When the incident surfaced, the British designer was fired from his role as creative director of Dior.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He eventually went on to serve as creative director of\u00a0fashion house Maison Margiela for a decade before leaving in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/1793932932_374_.jpeg\"  alt=\"gettyimages-2274799753-594x594\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            Nicole Kidman, Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos, and Anna Wintour attend the 2026 Met Gala celebrating Costume Art.
