BRITISH FORMER COMEDIAN Russell Brand was today convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault<\/a> following a trial in London.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The incidents Brand was convicted of took place on dates between 2001 and 2009, when he was a well-known media personality.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2007, Brand released a memoir entitled My Booky Wook in which he detailed his past drug addiction, subsequent sobriety and his growing fame.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The book also contained various crude depictions of his sexual\u00a0appetite and characterisations of women which were put to Brand during his time in the witness box.<\/p>\n

Brand was found not guilty of raping a woman he met at a cabaret show on the fringes of the 1999 Labour Party conference in Bournemouth.<\/p>\n

The complainant in that charge told the court she believed Brand was gay when they first met, leading to her agreeing for him to come to her hotel room.<\/p>\n

In his book, Brand used a picture of himself as a seven-year-old and wrote the caption: \u201cThis is the exact moment when I decided to act gay to attract girls. It took 15 years to produce results.\u201d<\/p>\n

The prosecutor said: \u201cThat\u2019s something you would do, wasn\u2019t it? That was something you would do to make girls trust you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Brand replied.<\/p>\n

\u2018Object of my desire\u2019<\/p>\n

Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC told the court that Brand liked to exercise \u201ccontrol\u201d over women, and felt \u201cdisdain\u201d towards them as he pursued his goal of sleeping with 5,000 women.<\/p>\n

She pointed jurors to his book where he discussed his \u201cbirthright orgasm\u201d and a 2017 interview Brand gave when he referred to women as \u201camusements\u201d in a \u201cplayground of orgasms\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As again relayed in court, the jury was told of Brand\u2019s writings in which he called himself \u201cdemonically sexy\u201d and admitted he could be \u201cuneasy company\u201d when in the pursuit of sex.<\/p>\n

He wrote:\n<\/p>\n

If I want something \u2013 whether it\u2019s a job or a woman \u2013 I will determinedly, resolutely, remove anything that\u2019s in the way, until I possess the object of my desire.<\/p>\n

Prosecuting barrister Karmy-Jones referenced that line from Brand in her closing speech, telling the jury: \u201cA lack of consent, no problem for Mr Brand, just an obstacle he would have to remove, or perhaps ignore.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Brand\u2019s defence barrister Ian Winter sought to counter the references to My Booky Wook, saying that the prosecution\u2019s use of them was a \u201cbid of desperation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Winter said it was a \u201cfunny book\u201d containing jokes. He highlighted the passage alongside the childhood photograph in which Brand wrote that he \u201cdecided to act gay to attract girls\u201d.<\/p>\n

The barrister said it was \u201cso obviously a joke\u2026the joke is that it didn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karmy-Jones read out other extracts from My Booky Wook, in which Brand had said he \u201cwould never have relented until I received my birthright orgasm\u201d.<\/p>\n

In another he wrote: \u201cMy egotism and the single-mindedness with which I pursued potentially sexual conquests could often make me uneasy company\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the book, Brand referred to himself as a \u201cfervid, febrile mass of sexual energy\u201d towards the end of sex, adding: \u201cI\u2019ll do anything. I\u2019m demonically sexy.\u201d<\/p>\n
