Once everyone was seated, the lights dimmed as the unmistakable opening piano note of \u201cRunaway\u201d set the show into motion, with one lone model striding out in a killer black trench. From there, two more models, men this time, walked out in the opposite direction; what followed was a bit of organized chaos with the number of models and paths alternating at random intervals to the tune of a playlist that zipped between new Ye music (UK garage vibes, it would seem) and a gothic orchestra not unlike the scores Danny Elfman used to chef up for Tim Burton.<\/p>\n
The fits were crisp, practical and tactical. Most of the menswear was ready-made for basic maneuvers, while the women\u2019s looks were sleek and casual, with a few Milla Jovovich-in-Fifth-Element skimpy ensembles thrown in because Ye can only restrain himself but so much. The most notable thing, about the guys especially, were the relatively streamlined silhouettes: close-cropped coats, bombers and vests, fitted pants and sweats. Where past Ye lines championed and emblazoned the path for the baggy wave, with oversized boots<\/a> and pants you could swim in, Ye seemed to be brazenly planting a flag back on the opposite end of the spectrum.<\/p>\n Nearly 12 years, and a dozen lifetimes, since his debut Yeezy Season 1<\/a> runway show in 2015, the notion of a \u201cSeason 01\u201d\u2014his first formal showing since his damning 2022 show in Paris, the one with the \u201cWhite Lives Matter\u201d shirts<\/a>\u2014is a conspicuous attempt to clear the slate. All of his previous shows had been produced in collaboration with Adidas, who severed ties with Ye<\/a> four years ago, after he tweeted a tirade of antisemetic remarks. This time around, to let the clothes tell it, Ye is locked in. I don\u2019t have an image of every single Yeezy Season line seared into my brain, but I feel comfortable saying Ye\u2019s latest was the first time I looked at one of his collections and objectively thought, I could wear that. Most of the gear is quite solid\u2014and familiar Ye’s running the same playbook with Season 01 that he\u2019s run with his music, and to some degree, his persona. It\u2019s the Yeezy gear you know and love(d), refined to make it that much more palatable, similar to the way a song like \u201cWhatever Works\u201d puts him back over chipmunk\u2019d soul samples. And true to the title, it does indeed; the fact that it does is maybe a testament to the brilliance that got lost in the insanity. But is playing the hits (quite literally, with \u201cRunaway\u201d opening the show) what we want from one of the most paradigm-shifting\u2014and absolutely chaotic\u2014creative minds of our time?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ye and Kid Cudi.
