The A$915 million museum project brings more than 3,000 objects, five opening exhibitions and a 23-day cultural festival to Western Sydney, offering visitors a new destination for science, technology, art and design.

Located on the banks of the Parramatta River, the museum is the first major state cultural institution established in Western Sydney and one of Australia’s most significant new cultural developments.

The new attraction opens with four free exhibitions and one ticketed exhibition, alongside an extensive programme of performances, workshops, talks, food experiences and family activities.

Its opening festival runs from November 7 through November 29, with more than 170 programmes designed to attract visitors from across Australia and overseas.

Powerhouse Parramatta Opens With Five Major Exhibitions

The museum’s opening programme showcases more than 3,000 objects, including over 1,600 from the Powerhouse Collection.

The five major exhibitions are Task Eternal, Overflow, The Mall, Es Devlin: The Turning and The Dark.

Task Eternal explores humanity’s fascination with space, engineering and the possibility of living beyond Earth. The exhibition combines scientific innovations with major objects, installations and ideas about humanity’s future.

It is the only opening exhibition requiring paid admission for adults, while visitors under 16 can enter free.

The Mall examines the history and cultural influence of shopping centres, bringing together architecture, design, technology and fashion.

Among its objects are the Levi’s 501 jeans worn by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and early prototypes of the Predator football boot developed by Australian designer Craig Johnston and famously worn by David Beckham.

Es Devlin: The Turning introduces Australian audiences to a major exhibition by the internationally recognised British artist, whose work combines sculpture, performance, technology and immersive environments.

Overflow explores relationships between water, Country and community, while The Dark examines scientific and cultural approaches to darkness.

The exhibitions demonstrate the museum’s ambition to combine traditional collections with contemporary installations and interactive experiences.

23-Day Opening Festival Brings Hundreds of Cultural Experiences

Powerhouse Parramatta’s opening festival runs for 23 days, from November 7 to November 29, with an extensive programme spanning four weekends.

The festival features more than 170 programmes, including talks with international artists and designers, science presentations, concerts, workshops and culinary events.

Visitors can attend discussions about space exploration, artificial intelligence, architecture and emerging technologies, alongside performances celebrating the cultural communities of Western Sydney.

Among the featured participants are former NASA administrator and astronaut Charles Bolden, internationally acclaimed artist Es Devlin and Australian industrial designer Marc Newson.

The programme also celebrates Australia’s First Nations cultures, with performances and events developed in collaboration with Indigenous artists and communities.

Opening-weekend activities include heritage steam train and vintage bus experiences, connecting the museum’s interest in transport history with the surrounding city.

Special food programmes highlight the diversity of Western Sydney’s culinary scene, featuring chefs, food writers and local communities.

The festival also includes family-friendly activities, offering additional reasons for visitors to spend time in Parramatta rather than limiting their trip to Sydney’s traditional central-city attractions.

Read infrastructure outside Sydney’s traditional tourist centre.

The museum was designed by Franco-Japanese architecture practice Moreau Kusunoki in collaboration with Australian architecture firm Genton.

Its distinctive contemporary buildings and public spaces are intended to create a new architectural landmark on the Parramatta River waterfront.

For international visitors, the development provides another reason to explore Western Sydney, an area often overlooked by tourists concentrating on the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and beaches.

Parramatta already offers restaurants, shopping, riverside walks and historic attractions, including Old Government House and Parramatta Park.

The new museum could encourage longer visits to the district, supporting nearby hotels, restaurants and other visitor businesses.

The A$915 million project investment includes the construction of the museum, a new collection storage facility at Castle Hill and associated collection preservation and digitisation work.

The museum is part of a broader renewal of the Powerhouse institution, which also operates Sydney Observatory and other cultural facilities.

Powerhouse Parramatta Tickets, Opening Hours and Location

Powerhouse Parramatta is located at 34 Phillip Street, Parramatta, NSW 2150.

The museum is open seven days a week, with extended evening opening hours during the November festival.

From Thursday through Sunday during the opening festival, the museum is scheduled to remain open until 9 p.m. On Monday through Wednesday, opening hours are generally 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

General admission and four of the five opening exhibitions are free, although some individual activities may require advance registration or separate tickets.

Task Eternal is ticketed for adults, while children under 16 receive free admission.

Visitors should check the official museum website for availability, as some opening-weekend sessions have already reached capacity.

Parramatta is connected to central Sydney by rail and other public transport, allowing tourists to combine a museum visit with restaurants, riverside attractions and other activities in Western Sydney.

The opening of Powerhouse Parramatta gives Sydney a major new cultural destination at the beginning of Australia’s summer travel season, while its November festival provides a programme of special events for both local and international visitors.

Sydney has opened a major new tourist attraction with the launch of Powerhouse Parramatta on November 7,
