\n\tHalfway into his first time as DGA<\/a> president, Christopher Nolan<\/a> is holding the studios\u2019 feet to the fire in protecting copyrighted materials from AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new interview, the 2x Oscar winner explained that it\u2019s \u201cdown to the studios\u201d to go after AI recreations of their work, noting that he was \u201cvery pleased\u201d his current Academy Award contender The Odyssey<\/a> contains a legal warning against using the film to train AI data.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAI is too big a catchall term. It\u2019s describing too many things and it\u2019s being used by companies to absolve themselves of responsibility,\u201d he explained on the Hollywood Insiders<\/a> podcast. \u201cThey sort of want to portray it as this Frankenstein\u2019s monster that can get out of control and can change the world without them having any accountability for it. We have to strongly resist that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNolan added, \u201cThere\u2019s already legislation in place that protects people, protects creators, etc. And the fact that they these companies hide behind fair-use provisions, for example, I think longer term that won\u2019t hold up in court. There have already been some significant judgments against it. We\u2019re very focused at the Guild about holding the studios to account for protecting their copyrights. We can\u2019t do that. With very few exceptions in the Guild, we are not the copyright holders of the films that we\u2019ve worked on. It\u2019s down to the studios to do that. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd I was very pleased to see that the boilerplate at the end of The Odyssey, for the first time, it contains a message saying that this film cannot be ingested and used as training data,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing his election as DGA president<\/a> last September, after serving on the Guild\u2019s Artificial Intelligence Committee, Nolan told Deadline there are \u201cexcellent protections\u201d in place against AI, \u201cbut that\u2019s not enough<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou have to have a voice in how this tool is used moving forward. Also, we like to try and have a voice in, what\u2019s the legal framework?\u201d explained Nolan. \u201cBecause we generally aren\u2019t the copyright holders of our work, but our income, our residuals, depends on the appropriate monetization of those copyrights. So we\u2019re constantly in dialogue with the companies about, are you maximizing the value of the work that we\u2019ve created?
