{"id":70389,"date":"2025-10-09T22:01:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T22:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/70389\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T22:01:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T22:01:07","slug":"mourners-queuing-for-three-and-a-half-hours-in-limerick-is-a-testament-to-absolute-gentleman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/70389\/","title":{"rendered":"Mourners queuing for three-and-a-half hours in Limerick is a testament to &#8216;absolute gentleman&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MOURNERS queuing for three-and-a-half hours to pay their respects is a testament to the late Mick Hogan who had \u201ca wonderful gift with people\u201d, said Canon Noel Kirwan.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hogan &#8211; an uncle of The Cranberries\u2019 Noel and Mike Hogan &#8211; suffered an accident at home. Mr Hogan, aged 82, of O\u2019Dwyer Villas, Thomondgate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/limerickleader.ie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a> city tragically passed away, surrounded by his loving family, in UHL four days later.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/deaths\/1914799\/tributes-paid-to-shopkeeper-92-who-once-owned-all-three-stores-in-limerick-town.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tributes paid to shopkeeper, 92, who once owned all three stores in Limerick town<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The shock and sadness at the passing of the beloved husband, father and grandfather was reflected by mourners queuing for three-and-a-half hours outside his reposal at Cross\u2019s Funeral Home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a testament to Mick. It was incredible &#8211; the numbers were remarkable,\u201d said Canon Kirwan.<\/p>\n<p>The former Howmedica employee, formerly of Mary Street, was deeply involved with St Mary\u2019s RFC, Star Rovers FC and St Munchin&#8217;s Community Siamsa throughout his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a very wide range between soccer and rugby. He was one of the founder members of Siamsa in St Munchin&#8217;s. He discovered a gift for acting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a fine singer, loved his music, rugby and soccer. He was one of the guys who was outstanding in anything he did,\u201d said Canon Kirwan.<\/p>\n<p>However, the canon said Mr Hogan\u2019s secret was his great gift with people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWork colleagues in Howmedica said how good he was to people starting out. He\u2019d be watching over them and making sure they were settling in. He was just a nice guy,\u201d said Canon Kirwan, who celebrated\u00a0 the funeral Mass of Mr Hogan in St Mary\u2019s Church last week.<\/p>\n<p>Canon Kirwan extended his sympathies to Mr Hogan\u2019s loving wife Kathleen, children Dee, Shirley, Michael and Hilary and extended family.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Willie O\u2019Dea said he knew Mr Hogan (pictured below), described him as \u201can extremely popular man\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/557132201_1372065188261938_8420767509165670021_n_(1)-1760013144862.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\"\/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are a highly-respected family. He was very involved with St Mary\u2019s RFC and will be missed by many people,\u201d said Mr O\u2019Dea.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Frankie Daly said the Hogan family is steeped in sport, music and culture in the city and county. He said he was shocked when he heard the sad\u00a0 news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lived beside him when I was a youngster in Thomondgate. I used to meet him frequently in Pa Roche\u2019s shop and I could be talking to him for up to an hour about sport. He was a great man to ask how you&#8217;re doing, give positive advice and encourage you to go for your dreams.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was so unassuming and so kind. He wouldn&#8217;t say a bad word about anybody. He was just an absolute gentleman &#8211; a really, really good honourable guy,\u201d said Cllr Daly. A request for donations in lieu of flowers to St Mary\u2019s RFC underage summed him\u00a0 up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loved St Mary\u2019s. He won a Munster Junior Cup with them in 1968. He was a fantastic rugby player, a trailblazer on the rugby field,\u201d said Cllr Daly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/556027045_1410483934415705_6363625748327097444_n-1760012998029.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\"\/><\/p>\n<p>St Mary\u2019s RFC &#8211; in a post on social media &#8211; said the club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of their former player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA proud member of our famous Junior Cup-winning team, Michael also served as a valued member of the house committee. A familiar and cherished presence at the club on match days, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rest in peace, Michael \u2014 from everyone at St Mary\u2019s RFC,\u201d read the post.<\/p>\n<p>Eliz, Eamonn, Philomena, Eddie, Evelyn and all Mick\u2019s friends in Kinsella\u2019s Bar also took to social media to pay tribute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fantastic neighbour and friend. An absolute gentleman of the highest order!!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMick, as everyone knows, was a staunch rugby man. He loved watching Munster rugby games and even though he is pictured below (reluctantly!) with a Thomond trophy last season, Mick was a very proud Saint Mary\u2019s man!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/557606826_1372065278261929_6246779926613808712_n-1760013017332.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The post continued: \u201cMick loved his family, but especially loved spending time and enjoying a drink with his adored grandchildren. it was no secret that his grandchildren were his world. He was very proud of them all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with Kathleen, Michael, Deirdre, Shirley, Hilary, Mick\u2019s grandchildren and extended family and friends. Thinking of all his friends in St Mary&#8217;s RFC also. We will raise a Jameson for you.
