\n \u201cIt\u2019s not just about rugby \u2013 it\u2019s about connection, resilience, and the power of community.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
‘Soldier Field’, a tribute play to Munster and Ireland rugby legend Anthony ‘Axel’ Foley, will be returning to Limerick this month.<\/p>\n
Following a run of sell-out performances across the country, the play will take the stage at the University Concert Hall for its last stop on the tour.<\/p>\n
The date falls on the eve of Ireland\u2019s rematch with the All Blacks in Chicago, the fixture that forms the emotional heart of the story.<\/p>\n
It commemorates Anthony’s passing in October 2016 and the unforgettable Test match just weeks later, where a grieving Ireland team defeated New Zealand for the very first time.<\/p>\n
Written by best-selling author and playwright Pat McCarry, the play follows eight dedicated Irish fans and features four national team players\u2014Conor Murray, CJ Stander, Rob Kearney, and Andrew Trimble\u2014as they grapple with the emotion of that day.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Speaking on Live 95’s Limerick Today, Pat said, “For Ireland to go, especially four weeks after Anthony had passed as well, and for four Munster players to have such a kind of key role in that win… that’s a base to tell a great story.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
“It’s just a really nice way to kind of pay tribute to somebody like Anthony Foley,” he added.<\/p>\n
“A lot of what’s in the play is told through the eyes of the fans who are at the game and their stories… And then through the eyes of the players as well.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Orla Foley, Anthony’s sister, said, “‘Soldier Field’ is an amazing play that truly encapsulates the emotion surrounding Ireland\u2019s historic win over New Zealand, while honouring my brother\u2019s legacy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
“He was loyal to the core, and his players, his teammates, they’ve continued that loyalty to him. They have a great bond and it’s a privilege to be part of that rugby family… It’s just fabulous, a lovely way to attribute to my brother.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not just about rugby \u2013 it\u2019s about connection, resilience, and the power of community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Proceeds from ticket sales will go to Orla\u2019s Wild Ways, a fundraising initiative founded by Orla in 2020 to honour her brother.\u00a0<\/p>\n
To date, over \u20ac64,000 has been raised for important causes.<\/p>\n
The charities currently supported by Orla\u2019s Wild Ways are:<\/p>\n
Mid-West Cancer Foundation, supporting cancer patients and their families.
\n CRY Ireland, providing free bereavement counselling and cardiac screening for families affected by sudden cardiac death.
\n Irish Rugby Charitable Trust, supporting rugby players who have suffered life-changing injuries.<\/p>\n
