{"id":77076,"date":"2025-10-13T05:19:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T05:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/77076\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T05:19:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T05:19:08","slug":"its-sort-of-like-a-divorce-top-analyst-sees-trade-war-with-china-as-ugly-complex-this-kind-of-story-doesnt-have-a-good-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/77076\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It\u2019s sort of like a divorce&#8217;: Top analyst sees trade war with China as ugly, complex: &#8216;This kind of story doesn\u2019t have a good guy&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For months, bubbling trade tensions between China and the U.S. seemed to calm to a simmer, with words like \u201cthaw\u201d and \u201ctruce\u201d swapped in for warnings of economic \u201cwar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, hostilities appear to be returning to full boil.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-xi-china-cc47e258cfc6336dfddcc20fa67a3642\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-xi-china-cc47e258cfc6336dfddcc20fa67a3642\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">series of tit-for-tat moves this week<\/a>\u00a0by the two superpowers has thrust trade hostilities back in the global spotlight, roiling markets and raising alarms of what might come next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s poke the bear again,\u201d economist Aleksandar Tomic, an associate dean at Boston College, said of the renewed sparring. \u201cLet\u2019s stir the hornet\u2019s nest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A look at where things stand in the U.S.-China trade standoff:<\/p>\n<p>Signs of trade-war escalation roil markets<\/p>\n<p>Tensions between China and the U.S. transcend any presidency or political party. But Donald Trump\u2019s return to the White House has brought new levels of rancor. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tariffs\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">volley of tariffs were introduced<\/a>, raised and reduced in the year\u2019s first half, igniting retaliation from Chinese leader Xi Jinping. But more recently, several months of relative calm had prevailed.<\/p>\n<p>That truce showed signs of fizzling this week, though, with China announcing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-earths-exports-trump-dad99d532f858f04d750d0b8c50e5ed6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-earths-exports-trump-dad99d532f858f04d750d0b8c50e5ed6\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">strict new limits on exports of rare earth minerals<\/a>\u00a0crucial to high-tech products. Trump, in turn, threatened an additional 100% tax on Chinese imports by Nov. 1 and export controls on American software. Both sides also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-us-port-fees-a67996522d4705e663e37515fa45baf5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-us-port-fees-a67996522d4705e663e37515fa45baf5\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">hit one another\u2019s ships with new port fees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether public moves by Washington and Beijing are meant to advance private talks between the two sides is unknown. But they roiled stock markets, with Friday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-rates-ai-f2c8bcc1f46043ab504cf4b0281e3401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-rates-ai-f2c8bcc1f46043ab504cf4b0281e3401\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">bringing the S&amp;P 500 its worst day<\/a>\u00a0since April and a new dose of uncertainty about what is next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither this is it, the so-called tariff truce is over and both sides are going to rapidly escalate or these are negotiation talks ahead of the talks between Xi and Trump,\u201d said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Capital Markets in Cincinnati, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Jostling for advantage, with exports as bargaining chips<\/p>\n<p>With so much unknown about any possible behind-the-scenes negotiations between the two nations, it is hard to gauge who might have the upper hand.<\/p>\n<p>But China may sense an opening, with Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/government-shutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/government-shutdown\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">challenged by a government shutdown<\/a>\u00a0and the impacts of the ongoing trade war.<\/p>\n<p>American soybean farmers who long relied on Chinese sales\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/soybeans-trade-tariff-china-united-states-export-025792707c4e4e91d975f8558edae1d8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/soybeans-trade-tariff-china-united-states-export-025792707c4e4e91d975f8558edae1d8\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">are now being passed over for exports<\/a>\u00a0from Brazil, Argentina and elsewhere. U.S. investors have happily watched markets driven upward by excitement over artificial intelligence, but China dominates the world in the rare earth minerals that are key to technological hardware. American consumers who have come to expect an endless supply of cheap goods that roll off Chinese conveyor belts are bracing for higher prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt becomes an issue of who can replace supply chains faster. And, at least right now, I think China is winning that one,\u201d Tomic said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what the cycle of a soybean is, but I bet you can grow a soybean faster than you can build a toy factory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Are tariff threats empty or a negotiating strategy?<\/p>\n<p>Trump has suggested a deal is still possible.<\/p>\n<p>He has frequently made threats that turn out to be empty, used as part of a negotiating strategy. For now, Trump has not formally canceled a meeting planned with Xi later this month on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, though he said nothing was certain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that we\u2019re going to have it,\u201d he said in the Oval Office on Friday. \u201cI\u2019m going to be there regardless, so I would assume we might have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chandler said it might appear to be a sudden, dramatic blowup between the U.S. and China, but it is really just more of the same from two parties embroiled in an acrimonious, long-running feud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sort of like a divorce: The wife and the husband are accusing one another of things that, from the outside, look more complicated,\u201d Chandler said. \u201cThis kind of story doesn\u2019t have a good guy.
