\n Forum Books will host an evening with historian and author John Willis on Thursday, November 6.\n<\/p>\n
\n The book features a collection of lesser-known accounts from the Second World War, including transcribed letters shared between Jean Clarkson and Douglas Capes.\n<\/p>\n
\n Ruth Marlee, their daughter, said: “Initially, they became pen pals when Douglas Capes was a medic in Montgomery\u2019s 8th Army, and Jean Clarkson lived at Elrington Hall, near Haydon Bridge.\n<\/p>\n
\n “Life as a ‘Desert Rat’ couldn’t have been more different from Northumbrian rural life.\n<\/p>\n
\n “The transcript of their letters is a remarkable view of history, which author John Willis added to his fascinating book, *The People’s War*.\n<\/p>\n
\n “My parents’ small contribution has been included with the same sensitivity, accuracy and respect that John has given all the unheard stories of everyday bravery, moments of terror, and tales of life-affirming communities.”\n<\/p>\n
\n Mr Willis is a historian and television executive, known for his roles as director of programmes at Channel 4 and director of factual and learning at the BBC.\n<\/p>\n
\n Forum Books will host the event at 7pm.\n<\/p>\n
