{"id":79600,"date":"2025-10-14T09:27:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T09:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/79600\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T09:27:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T09:27:11","slug":"supermarket-gets-green-light-to-stock-its-shelves-with-beer-at-limerick-branch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/79600\/","title":{"rendered":"Supermarket gets green light to stock its shelves with beer at Limerick branch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la has given Tesco Ireland planning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/231\/planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">permission<\/a> to increase the range of alcohol it serves at its store in Moyross.<\/p>\n<p>But the supermarket giant has been told it cannot advertise the sale of alcohol on the front of its shop window at Watch House Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Up to now, Tesco Ireland only sold wine at its newest Limerick outlet on the northside.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/planning\/1918131\/decision-made-on-planned-tower-block-of-apartments-in-limerick.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Decision made on planned tower block of apartments in Limerick<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Limerick City and County Council gave the firm permission to begin stocking beer, spirits and other alcohols.<\/p>\n<p>But this decision was appealed to An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la.<\/p>\n<p>The application to increase the alcohol range came despite the fact there is an existing off-licence in the unit adjoining Tesco\u2019s Moyross branch.<\/p>\n<p>One person who appealed against the council\u2019s approval stated that granting permission to the sale of a wider range of alcohols in Tesco would give rise to \u201cincreased crime, loitering, public drinking, littering, harm to public safety, pressure on gardai and local community resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The presence of a rival off-licence, Carry Out, was also highlighted, with one objector claiming that five off-licences operate within a 1.5km radius of the entrance to Moyross.<\/p>\n<p>However, two of those premises named in the objection are in fact pubs.<\/p>\n<p>Agents for Tesco contended an area of its superstore reserved for an off-licence is \u201cdistinctly different\u201d from a standalone off-licence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed alcohol sales area is less than 10% of the gross floor area of the unit,\u201d Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la stated in a summary of responses to the objections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposal will not be a destination alcohol retail, but rather the alcohol sales element represents an ancillary part of the general convenience officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the matter of anti-social behaviour, the agents pointed to a security presence at the supermarket, alongside passive surveillance by staff and physical barriers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrict operational policies particularly in regard to age verification will ensure the operation of the unit will not have a spillover effect onto adjoining public facilities,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>They did state that issues around anti-social behaviour and public safety risks are not \u201cmaterial planning consideration considerations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One objector pointed out the presence of a pauper\u2019s graveyard on land adjoining the store, but Tesco\u2019s agents noted no physical works are proposed for that site.<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211;
