Laurie Metcalf\u2019s four decades-long acting career spans comedy and drama across television<\/a>, film<\/a> and stage<\/a>. However there\u2019s one dream she has yet to fulfill.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to do a musical,\u201d Metcalf tells me. \u201cBut my range of notes is only about seven notes. It would have to be an extremely specific part. I don\u2019t know if that would ever be in my future, but I think it would be such a rush to be in a musical.<\/p>\n

Metcalf is currently on Broadway in the preview run of Samuel D. Hunter<\/a>\u2019s \u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road,\u201d<\/a> a family drama about a woman (Metcalf) who reunites with her estranged nephew (Micah Stock). Opening Oct. 30 at the Booth Theatre, the play marks Metcalf\u2019s seventh collaboration with director Joe Mantello<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a little tired, but this is my favorite place to be,\u201d Metcalf, who earned Tonys in 2017<\/a> and 2018<\/a> for her work in \u201cA Doll\u2019s House, Part 2\u201d<\/a> and \u201cThree Tall Women,\u201d<\/a> tells me over the phone on a recent Friday afternoon. \u201cWe have two previews under our belt and I\u2019m going in for notes this afternoon. We\u2019re fine-tuning things. This is my happy spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road\u201d comes on the heels of the release of \u201cMonster: The Ed Gein Story,\u201d the Netflix series starring Charlie Hunnam as serial killer Ed Gein\u2019s and Metcalf as his domineering and religious fanatic mother Augusta Gein. After co-creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan pitched her the project, \u201cI agreed to do it without even having seen a script,\u201d Metcalf recalls.<\/p>\n

This latest installment of Murphy\u2019s \u201cMonster\u201d franchise focuses on Ed\u2019s relationship with his mother and how her abusive actions may have contributed to his horrifying killing spree in the mid-1950s. \u201cIt\u2019s nature versus nurture, right?\u201d Metcalf says. \u201cI think it\u2019s both cases for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the series\u2019 most powerful and disturbing scenes shows Augusta scolding a grown-up Ed as he stands in front of her completely naked. \u201cI\u2019m sitting in that chair looking at a grown man, but I\u2019m lecturing him like he was seven years old,\u201d Metcalf explains. \u201cI\u2019m not seeing him as a grown man, but seeing him still under my care and under my sick supervision. It\u2019s a mother-son teaching experience. It\u2019s simplistic, but warped. But mentally, it was helpful to see him like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Metcalf gives high praise to director Max Winkler. \u201cDespite the subject matter and the tone of the series, the shooting space was really fun,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to picture that sort of work being fun, but it was because it was very collaborative. Max is so open to accidents that might happen in the scene. He would feed me things in between takes that we could do. Some he used, some he didn\u2019t. I really liked working that way. The job itself was a wonderful set to be on, despite how dark it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

After filming \u201cMonster\u201d and a week before heading back to Broadway, Metcalf wrapped her next television project, Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott\u2019s eight-episode Netflix mob comedy \u201cBig Mistakes\u201d about two siblings (Levy and Taylor Ortega) who are caught up in organized crime. Metcalf plays their mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cI read the pilot, and then I wrote my agent immediately saying, \u2018100% want to do this,\u2019\u201d says Metcalf, who earned three Emmys for her work on \u201cRoseanne\u201d and another for a guest spot on \u201cHacks.\u201d \u201cI saw how unique it was for a single camera, half-hour comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I tell Metcalf that I grew up in a mob neighborhood in Queens, NY. \u201cYou\u2019re gonna like this,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s very, very funny and very unexpected. I don\u2019t think the audience ever gets out ahead of where it\u2019s going.\u201d<\/p>\n
