It promises to be a meeting of naturalist minds on Saturday at BookHampton in East Hampton, when Carl Safina, the pre-eminent Long Island ecologist, interviews Caroline Sutton about her brand-new collection of essays, \u201cEyes in the Soles of My Feet,\u201d from Schaffner Press.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The subtitle says a lot, \u201cFrom Horseshoe Crabs to Sycamores, Exploring Hidden Connections to the Natural World,\u201d and the volume\u2019s 29 essays are arranged in four sections, water, earth, air, and fire, but there\u2019s more than science at work, as the author\u2019s research is paired with her personal reflections as a mother and grandmother.<\/p>\n
Ms. Sutton lives in East Hampton. Her previous books include \u201cHow Do They Do That?\u201d Saturday\u2019s talk starts at 6 p.m., and tickets are $10.<\/p>\n
M.F.A. Open House and Reading<\/p>\n
Been a while since you\u2019ve checked in with the M.F.A. program in creative writing at Stony Brook Southampton? Then Tuesday is your day. Or early evening. Late afternoon? That is, from 4:30 to 6 the profs and administrators there will welcome all comers to an open house at good ol\u2019 Chancellors Hall on campus, after which a Writers Speak reading will convene in the Rakoff Studio upstairs.<\/p>\n
The open house will offer opportunities to meet faculty, get hip to classes, admission, cost, and financial aid, and chat up students now enrolled.<\/p>\n
Reading will be the faculty\u2019s Molly Gaudry, the author of two novels in verse, \u201cWe Take Me Apart\u201d and its sequel, \u201cDesire: A Haunting,\u201d Hudson Hess, a program alum, and Claire Jentsch, a current student, \u201cfoodie, and ghost story enthusiast.\u201d<\/p>\n
