Like Google and Xerox, its name became a verb. People had to \u201cTiVo\u201d the new episode of Battlestar Galactica or game 4 of the Red Sox vs. Cardinals, not \u201crecord\u201d it. While it didn\u2019t invent the DVR, TiVo popularized it and many of the features we would eventually take for granted, like the ability to pause or rewind live TV, and watch one program while recording another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Those features were covered in the now infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US6233389B1\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Patent 6,233,389<\/a> \u2014 better known as the Time Warp patent. TiVo spent a good chunk of the 2000s and early 2010s defending its intellectual property through a series of high-profile lawsuits, most notably against <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TiVo_Inc._v._EchoStar_Corp.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EchoStar<\/a>. That particular saga lasted for the better part of a decade, with TiVo originally filing the suit in January of 2004 and the final <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.echostar.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/tivo-dish-network-and-echostar-announce-half-billion-dollar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$500 million settlement<\/a> being awarded in April of 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But TiVo spent much of its prime years locked in court battles with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/6\/8\/4408516\/tivo-patent-settlements-with-google-cisco-time-warner-yield-490\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">major players<\/a> in the television and digital video space. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2012\/3\/26\/2903195\/tivo-patent-countersuit-injunction-motorola-time-warner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Motorola, Time Warner Cable<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2012\/1\/3\/2680505\/tivo-receives-215-million-patent-settlement-from-at-t\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AT&amp;T<\/a>, Dish Network, Cisco, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2012\/9\/24\/3382144\/tivo-verizon-patent-lawsuit-settlement-250-million\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Verizon<\/a> all found themselves on the receiving end of a patent infringement lawsuit from TiVo. TiVo came out victorious in almost every single one. The US Patent Office even agreed to reexamine the patent on two separate occasions and <a href=\"https:\/\/generalpatent.com\/tivo-s-time-warp-patent-affirmed-patent-office-patent-infringement-suit-dish-network-and-echostar.html#:~:text=Buy%20Patents-,TiVo\u2019s%20%22Time%20Warp%22%20Patent%20Affirmed%20by%20Patent%20Office%20in%20Patent,is%20still%20infringing%20the%20patent.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reaffirmed its claims<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq2 _1xwtict9\">If the company had been focused on revenue sources outside the courtroom, it could have been at the forefront of the smart TV rollout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Licensing its technology became the primary way TiVo made money as it entered the 2010s. The problem was, by then, the writing was on the wall. Netflix launched its streaming service in January 2007. Hulu entered beta later that year and launched publicly in March of 2008. That year also marked the launch of Roku\u2019s first device and the earliest models of modern smart TVs, like the Samsung PAVV Bordeaux TV 750.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">DVRs became standard issue with most cable TV packages. Sure, TiVo\u2019s interface was slicker, and it had advanced features, such as remotely scheduling recordings via TiVo Central Online or transferring them to a computer with TiVoToGo. But spending $200 or more on a separate DVR in 2008 (at least if you wanted HD tuners), plus an additional subscription cost on top of your cable bill, was an increasingly hard sell when Time Warner would give you a DVR that was good enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Roku was offering simple-to-use streaming set-top boxes at impulse purchase prices \u2014 as low as <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.roku.com\/news\/2011\/10\/roku-introduces-new-49-streaming-player\/ys2d9vr9-1564179703\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$49.99<\/a> by 2011. Google pushed prices even lower with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23537741\/google-chromecast-10-year-old-happy-birthday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chromecast in 2013<\/a>. Smart TV operating systems were becoming increasingly capable. TiVo was adding support for Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services, but it seemed to constantly be playing catch-up as it entered the new decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tldr\/2014\/12\/8\/7354405\/goodbye-tivo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TiVo\u2019s hardware had stagnated<\/a>. It was wasting time on features like the ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2008-11-17-us-tivo-users-pick-up-dominos-pizza-ordering-tracking-abiliti.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">order Domino\u2019s from your TV<\/a>. And its biggest money maker \u2014 a patent focused on manipulating broadcast television \u2014 was increasingly becoming obsolete as cord-cutting began to grow in popularity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">According to nScreenMedia traditional pay TV subscriptions peaked in the US in 2010 at around <a href=\"https:\/\/nscreenmedia.com\/us-pay-tv-subscribers-missed-5m-new-since-2010\/#:~:text=What%20does%20this%20mean%20for,in%20missed%20revenue%20for%202015.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">103 million<\/a>, or roughly 89 percent of households. In 2025, that number is down to just <a href=\"https:\/\/nscreenmedia.com\/us-pay-tv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">49.6 million<\/a>, or 37.6 percent of households. The most popular streaming services are now easily outpacing linear pay TV as they copy some of its moves by leaning into live content anchored by sports and other spectacles that draw eyeballs to now-unskippable ads. At the end of 2024, Netflix had <a href=\"https:\/\/s22.q4cdn.com\/959853165\/files\/doc_financials\/2024\/ar\/Netflix-10-K-01272025.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">89.6 million subscribers<\/a> and Disney Plus <a href=\"https:\/\/thewaltdisneycompany.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/05\/q2-fy25-earnings.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">56.8 million<\/a> in the US and Canada. (The companies report subscriptions by region only, not country.) As TiVo continued to battle companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/6\/6\/4403780\/tivo-and-google-settle-motorola-patent-infringement-lawsuit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a> and Time Warner in court, its customer base was drying up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">TiVo was eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/4\/29\/11535490\/rovi-tivo-acquisition-1-1-billion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">purchased by Rovi<\/a>, a company whose primary business is hoarding patents and either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexttv.com\/news\/bad-adeia-genes-tivorovi-patent-troll-biz-lives-on-signs-verizon-for-more-hot-ip-licensing-action\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">licensing them<\/a> to other companies or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamtvinsider.com\/cable\/tivo-files-another-patent-suit-targeting-comcast-s-x1-platform#:~:text=(Image:%20TiVo%20Corp.)%20TiVo%20Corp.\u2018s%20patent%20troll,one%20device%20and%20resume%20them%20on%20another.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suing companies<\/a> in order to force them to license their technology. This, sadly, was to be TiVo\u2019s fate going forward. When it was purchased by tech licensing firm Xperi in 2020, the press release announcing the merger didn\u2019t tout best-in-class hardware or innovative set-top box software. Its last model, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/10\/1\/20893379\/tivo-edge-dvr-dolby-vision-atmos-hdr-4k-streaming-live-tv-broadcast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TiVo Edge<\/a>, was released in 2019. And this month, the company confirmed it had quietly sold the last of its stock on September 30th and would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/798997\/tivo-stops-dvr-hardware-production-sales\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exiting the hardware business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">TiVo says it plans to focus on its fledgling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/6\/24330498\/tivo-tv-us-launch-platform-ces-sharp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">smart TV OS<\/a> \u2014 a move that\u2019s probably 15 years too late. Perhaps if the company had been focused on revenue sources outside the courtroom, it could have been at the forefront of the smart TV rollout. Maybe it could have developed its own streaming-first device that was more than a lazy (and late) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/8\/22425753\/tivo-stream-4k-dongle-android-tv-no-more-jon-kirchner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reskin of Android TV<\/a>. TiVo\u2019s UI and iconic peanut remote were beloved. Its brand was a household name.
