{"id":89280,"date":"2025-10-18T19:42:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T19:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/89280\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T19:42:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T19:42:08","slug":"first-asian-hornet-nest-discovered-in-northern-ireland-removed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/89280\/","title":{"rendered":"First Asian hornet nest discovered in Northern Ireland removed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Asian hornet nest discovered in the Dundonald area of Belfast has been removed.<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Ireland Environment Agency(NIEA) described the process on Saturday as \u201csafe and controlled\u201d and said its officers worked with a \u201csuitably trained\u201d pest control company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They also received advice from the UK Animal and Plant Health Agency and had \u201con-the-ground support\u201d from an official with the National Biodiversity Data Centre in Waterford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The agency said surveillance will continue in the area and urged \u201ccontinued vigilance\u201d from the public and the beekeeping community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The insects were first spotted by a member of the public and reported on October 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s the first nest of its kind discovered in Northern Ireland, and NIEA say Asian hornets pose a \u201csignificant threat\u201d to honeybees, native insects, pollinators and local ecosystems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An Asian hornet nest discovered in the Dundonald area of Belfast has been removed.
