While speaking to People<\/a> about her role of Kate Wyler in season 3 of Netflix’s The Diplomat, Russell, 49, said she was “totally empathetic” about the beauty standards her character has faced as a woman in the public eye.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s such a weird thing being a woman. Everyone has an opinion about the way you look, the way you dress, the way your hair is,” Russell added.<\/p>\n Russell knows what it’s like to face backlash about her appearance. While she was rising to fame as the titular character on The WB’s Felicity in the late ’90s, she faced backlash after she chopped off her famous long curly hair for a bold pixie cut.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s just the nature of our society. But I also find it really enjoyable, I mean, it\u2019s like a fun thing to play,\u201d she said of playing Kate in The Diplomat. \u201cI like how cranky she is about it, and how she\u2019s always trying to fight people about it, and is rude about it. I love it. Even though they might be 50 or 60 years old, they look amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n Russell continued, \u201cI watch this show and I\u2019m like, I do not look like that<\/a>, you know.
