An artist who has received online abuse about his plans for Bangor Marina sculptures has spoken of the difficulty of being attacked \u201con a personal level.\u201d <\/p>\n

The new art pieces aim to be in place next year, and they will include the largest bronze sculpture in Ireland. <\/p>\n

They are part of phase one of the marina redevelopment, which is costing approximately \u00a314 million. <\/p>\n

The artwork, created by Colin Davidson, is costing \u00a31.25 million of that.<\/p>\n

Part of the funding for the four-phase redevelopment scheme is coming from the UK Levelling Up Fund.<\/p>\n

The project aims to transform the Bangor waterfront into a vibrant hub for living, working and tourism. <\/p>\n

It will feature a new urban waterfront, a modernised Pickie Fun Park, and the three new bronze sculptures.<\/p>\n

Created by Colin Davidson, who grew up in Bangor, the three pieces reflect the themes of the North\u2019s newest city.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIf I was going to come up with anything, it would have to be viable as artwork… but also, that they could be meaningful to Bangor and be interacted with. For children to learn and play amongst,\u201d Mr Davidson told the Irish News<\/p>\n

He described the sculptures, which replicate hands: \u201cAs kids we make shadow puppets with hands. It hit the inner child in me.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the artist has come infor hard criticism online.<\/a> With the cost equalling \u00a31.25 million pounds, locals have been hitting out at the plans.<\/p>\n

He spoke of how it was troublesome to read some of the abuse on his social media page<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cI find it difficult when people attack me online personally. I live here, and I want the best for this part of the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo have messages like \u2018I should be ashamed of myself\u2019 does not sit with me remotely. Responses like that, as an artist who is trying his best\u2026 it\u2019s difficult to hear that I should be ashamed of myself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had hundreds of messages of support and people saying they love the idea. I\u2019m highly aware not everyone agrees to that. As an artist, I do not expect everyone to like my work, and I don\u2019t need it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Davidson added: \u201cLet\u2019s reserve judgement until the pieces are here. I hope people will embrace it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to say he is proud to be involved in the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be the largest bronze sculpture in Ireland by far. The majority of cost is going on people, who are helping make it happen. To be part of the redevelopment is an honour.\u201d <\/p>\n
