Many of the world\u2019s biggest websites and apps, including Perplexity, Canva, Signal, Amazon, Roblox, Coinbase and Atlassian began experiencing issues at around 8 am this morning (20 October).<\/p>\n
Downdetector<\/a>, the popular crowdsourced disruptions reporting platform, has recorded a spike in user reports in nearly 50 websites over the last few hours.<\/p>\n It is understood that many of the outages link to issues at Amazon Web Services (AWS), which offers the infrastructure that underpins much of the internet.<\/p>\n AWS\u2019 health dashboard<\/a> confirmed \u201csignificant error rates\u201d, finding that the issues appear to be related to \u201cDNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1.<\/p>\n \u201cThis issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region,\u201d it said, in addition to global services or features that rely on its US-EAST-1 endpoints.<\/p>\n \u201cPerplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We\u2019re working on resolving it,\u201d said the AI search engine start-up\u2019s CEO Aravind Srinivas, in a post on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage,\u201d posted<\/a> Meredith Whittaker, the president of Signal Foundation.<\/p>\n 37 of AWS\u2019 own services have also been affected by the outage, from AWS Systems Manager and Network Firewall to the Support Centre. \u201cDuring this time, customers may be unable to create of update support cases,\u201d one of the updates read.<\/p>\n
