<\/a>Is Suno x Spotify<\/a> the industry\u2019s AI endgame?<\/p>\n

Let me paint you a picture.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s February 2026. The music industry\u2019s\u00a0AI wars, which seemed intractable just months ago, have resolved in a way nobody quite foresaw.<\/p>\n

The announcement drops at\u00a04pm GMT\u00a0on a Tuesday:\u00a0Spotify Acquires Suno\u2019s Technology Assets for an Undisclosed Sum.<\/p>\n

The lawsuits evaporate. The attorneys go to the pub. The\u00a0music industry\u2019s relationship with AI\u00a0enters a new phase.<\/p>\n

How might we get there?\u00a0Snuggle down for story time.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Spotify\u00a0announced\u00a0AI licensing pre-agreements<\/a>\u00a0with all three majors, plus leading indies\u00a0Merlin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Believe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

No product was announced\u00a0per se, but serious-sounding and universal (small \u2018u\u2019) promises were made over collaboratively developing\u00a0\u201cartist-first AI music products\u201d.<\/p>\n

These products, pledged Spotify, would be built upon \u201cupfront agreements\u201d with the music companies \u2013 not by\u00a0\u201casking for forgiveness later\u201d.<\/p>\n

As a result, music\u2019s\u00a0AI chessboard\u00a0is taking shape.<\/p>\n

Suno\u00a0sits with\u00a0$125 million\u00a0in\u00a0VC funding<\/a>, and a\u00a0$500 million\u00a0valuation, but mounting legal pressure.<\/p>\n

That heat comes from the majors\u2019 aggressive lawsuit against it, fuelled by what\u00a0Sir Lucian Grainge<\/a>\u00a0recently called<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0\u201cunauthorized (and, we believe, illegal) exploitation\u201d\u00a0of artists\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n

Udio, meanwhile, has been quietly building bridges. Sources suggest it\u2019s closer to a licensing deal with the majors than\u00a0Suno\u00a0\u2013 but still some way off.<\/p>\n

And\u00a0Spotify? Spotify has just signaled it wants to be the\u00a0Switzerland of gen-AI music\u00a0\u2013 neutral ground where everyone can play, and everyone can profit.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how it\u00a0could\u00a0all unfold from here:<\/p>\n

Suno\u2019s\u00a0investors start getting nervous. The legal bills are real, and unrelenting. In comparison to\u00a0Udio, it may end up isolated, license-less, and in need of a friend.<\/p>\n

(That\u2019s doubly true if Suno \u2013 reportedly<\/a> now looking to raise more money at a $2 billion valuation \u2013 cannot convince would-be VC backers that the majors\u2019 expensive litigation will, eventually, go away.)<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0Spotify\u00a0faces its own pressures. Key competitor\u00a0YouTube<\/a>\u00a0has already unleashed tools that let people\u00a0remix short videos<\/a>\u00a0with AI.<\/p>\n

SPOT\u00a0just struck its own\u00a0partnership<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0OpenAI\u00a0\u2013 but, to some degree, one suspects it did so to stave off\u00a0Sam Altman\u2019s\u00a0interest in music for a little while longer.<\/p>\n

Conclusion:\u00a0Daniel Ek<\/a>\u2018s\u00a0streaming giant needs to make a splash, and fast.<\/p>\n

Yes, Spotify is\u00a0vowing<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0build AI products\u00a0that \u201ccreate wholly new revenue streams for rightsholders, artists, and songwriters\u201d.<\/p>\n

But could a simpler solution reveal itself? Could\u00a0Spotify\u00a0end up offering\u00a0Suno\u00a0a lifeline?<\/p>\n

Not a massive check, but enough cash to\u00a0make Suno\u2019s investors whole\u00a0and, crucially,\u00a0make the lawsuits go away.<\/p>\n

Better than Suno\u2019s VC backers watching that\u00a0$125 million\u00a0funding round get torched as kindling for expensive litigation.<\/p>\n

This week,\u00a0Sir Lucian Grainge\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0UMG\u2019s core principle around AI music: \u201cWe will NOT license any model that uses an artist\u2019s voice or generates new songs which incorporate an artist\u2019s existing songs without their consent.\u201d<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Spotify-owned Suno, rebuilt with proper licensing, becomes the \u201cresponsible\u201d alternative UMG has been seeking.<\/p>\n

It could also immediately meet a different need for Spotify:\u00a0additional subscription revenue streams\/tiers\u00a0outside of its core Premium offering.<\/p>\n

Imagine:<\/p>\n

Unlimited AI track generation<\/p>\n

Remix tools for existing songs (properly licensed, naturally)<\/p>\n

Collaborative features for human-AI composition<\/p>\n

Early access to new AI models and capabilities<\/p>\n

A music\u00a0creation\u00a0platform built into a music\u00a0consumption\u00a0platform.<\/p>\n

What strikes me most is how familiar this all feels. The music industry has been here before \u2013 with\u00a0radio, with\u00a0MTV, with\u00a0Napster<\/a>, with\u00a0Spotify\u00a0itself: initial resistance, gradual acceptance, eventual embrace, and finally, transformation into the new normal.<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the crucial difference: With\u00a0Napster, the industry let technological disruption happen\u00a0to\u00a0it. With\u00a0Spotify, it learned to\u00a0contain\u00a0the disruption.<\/p>\n

Now with AI, the majors could\u00a0perfect the playbook.<\/p>\n

In\u00a02008, Universal<\/a>, Sony<\/a>, Warner<\/a>, and Merlin collectively\u00a0took equity<\/a>\u00a0worth\u00a018%\u00a0of SPOT in exchange for crucial initial licenses \u2013 a stake that would be worth around\u00a0$25 billion\u00a0today.<\/p>\n

In\u00a02025\/2026?<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t be shocked to see those same majors,\u00a0plus\u00a0Spotify, end up with\u00a0control of Suno. A platform that \u2013 as things stand \u2013 they all mutually see as a threat.<\/p>\n
