Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> addressed the cancellation of Stephen Colbert\u2019s<\/a> show in a blistering takedown, making sure to call attention to the obvious \u201clies\u201d CBS told about ending \u201cThe Late Show\u201d next year. <\/p>\n

Kimmel appeared on Ted Danson\u2019s podcast, \u201cWhere Everybody Knows Your Name<\/a>,\u201d on Tuesday, and said that people will likely never know the full story of why Colbert\u2019s show was canceled \u2015 but he has some thoughts. <\/p>\n

Danson asked if the move by Paramount, which owns CBS, was a case of \u201cquid pro quo\u201d \u2014 in which the company sacked a prominent Trump critic in exchange for securing the go-ahead from the Trump administration for its merger plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know for sure,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cWhat I do know for sure is that some of the information that has been released by the people who let him go can\u2019t possibly be true. There\u2019s no way he\u2019s losing $40 million a year.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no way it\u2019s even close to that,\u201d the late night show host added. \u201cI know how finances of late night television shows work, and it\u2019s just ridiculous. It doesn\u2019t make any sense at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, when you hear things that are obviously lies, you have to assume that there are more lies behind it. And that\u2019s what I think,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Paramount canceled \u201cThe Late Show\u201d after Colbert criticized the company for paying a $16 million settlement to Trump<\/a> while it tried to get the administration\u2019s permission to merge with Skydance Media.<\/p>\n

Paramount said that \u201cThe Late Show\u201d cancellation was \u201cpurely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,\u201d<\/a> something fellow TV host and Bravo executive Andy Cohen also doesn\u2019t totally agree with<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is possible that it\u2019s losing money,\u201d Cohen said on SiriusXM\u2019s \u201cAndy Cohen Live\u201d in July of Colbert\u2019s show. But he explained that what CBS could\u2019ve done \u201cif a show is losing money that is also super important to the network.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would probably do is say, listen, Stephen, your show is losing X amount of money a year. There\u2019s two things we could do,\u201d he shared. \u201cWe could cut the budget in half, maybe move out of the Ed Sullivan Theater, do the show in a small studio that we already own, because CBS has a lot of studio space.\u201d <\/p>\n

The company could\u2019ve also cut staff or slimmed Colbert\u2019s filming schedule. While a network might start with those reductions and then reevaluate Colbert and his show\u2019s standings, none of that happened. <\/p>\n
