V for Vendetta is set for a nationwide theatrical release for its 20th anniversary on November 1 and 5 next year, and Fathom Entertainment, Saga Arts and Warner Bros. Pictures are out today with a teaser trailer inviting audiences to “Join V One Year from Tonight” — a riff on the iconic invitation in the film.
The 2006 political action thriller based on the graphic novel and produced by the Wachowskis is a film of defiance and freedom set against the dystopian, futuristic landscape of a totalitarian Britain. Natalie Portman stars as Evey, a young working-class woman rescued from the secret police by a masked freedom fighter known only as V (Hugo Weaving), who is leading a plot to take down the oppressors in dramatic fashion.
Directed by James McTeigue, the film also stars Stephen Rea, John Hurt, Stephen Fry, Tim Pigott-Smith, Rupert Graves, Roger Allam, Ben Miles and Sinéad Cusack. It grossed more than $70 million domestic and $132 million worldwide.
Producers are Joel Silver, Grant Hill and the Wachowskis from a screenplay by The Wachowskis based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore (Watchmen) and David Lloyd and published by Vertigo/DC Comics. Benjamin Waisbren is EP.
“From its early days as a graphic novel and then a feature film, few properties have struck a chord with fans and been more thought-provoking societally than V for Vendetta,” said Fathom’s VP Studio Relations Tom Lucas. “Twenty years later, the movie still resonates, and Fathom is so pleased to bring it back to theatres next November with our partners at Warner Bros. and Saga Arts.”
