The Jurassic era hasn’t ended. Although Universal Pictures has yet to officially confirm a sequel, Jurassic World Rebirth’s success couldn’t only lead to one thing.

A sequel to Jurassic World Rebirth was first rumored in early September, and the studio has yet to greenlight it. However, on top of the third Gremlins movie, Steven Spielberg’s creature franchise continues. The Insneider reports, via JoBlo, that Universal Pictures allegedly wants to reunite the whole Jurassic World Rebirth team, director Gareth Edwards included.

The report claims Edwards is “in final negotiations to return for the sequel.” The initial rumors claimed Scarlett Johansson was already tapped to return as Zora Bennett, but the new rumors highlight Universal wants the full team, which includes Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali, and Wicked and Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey, who was recently named People’s Sexiest Man Alive. This comes despite Bailey’s plans for an acting break.

Edwards previously addressed the possibility of a Jurassic World Rebirth sequel earlier this year, right after the film’s release. The director admitted, “Maybe there’s something in there.” However, even though Jurassic World Rebirth came with a strong franchise behind it, with two sets of trilogies, he highlighted, “But no, we tried to make this movie like a single standalone.”

The filmmaker has a long history with pre-existent franchises, helming 2014’s Godzilla and 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and explained, “When I look back on sequels, trilogies that I love, what they all have in common is that the first movie was on its own, and then it became a high-class problem of how do we now make the others?”

He clarified, “I’ve genuinely never talked about it with anybody. Not a single conversation with David Koepp or Frank Marshall or Universal about a sequel… All they want is for people to really like this movie and make the best film we can, and that’s it. And then it’s in the lap of the gods, everything else, really.”

Jurassic World Rebirth Was a Massive Commercial Success

The long-running dinosaur saga has been around for over three decades, and has grossed billions so far. While Jurassic World Rebirth didn’t manage to pass the billion milestone, like its predecessor, 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, which grossed just a little over the huge mark, it was a smash success.

Jurassic World Rebirth was the third-highest-grossing film from Hollywood, with a total of $868.6 million worldwide. It only fell behind Lilo & Stitch, the only film to cross the $1 billion mark so far, and A Minecraft Movie. That was a big hit for Universal, considering its generous $225 million budget. However, even with its commercial success, it didn’t win over the critics.

Jurassic World Rebirth has a divisive score. The dinosaur movie features a “rotten” 50% rating from the critics out of over 400 reviews, but 70% from the audience. While it’s not the worst-rated film, it wasn’t a complete critical failure.

Jurassic World Rebirth is streaming on Peacock.
