Between The Batman saga from Matt Reeves, the DCU plans from James Gunn, and the ongoing animated projects, Gotham’s favorite vigilante is everywhere. Now, the two creative forces behind some of those universes are teaming up for something brand new, a fresh and innovative animated film titled Dynamic Duo.
This marks the first official collaboration between DC Studios and WBPA, and it’s being developed through Reeves’ 6th & Idaho banner. Dynamic Duo will explore the early years of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, two of Batman’s most iconic Robins.
The film will be brought to life by Swaybox, the New Orleans-based creative team led by Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson, who are known for their groundbreaking practical puppetry work. Mintz is set to direct, with Reeves and Gunn producing.
“I have wanted to make a film with Arthur and Swaybox for many years, and for that film to be Dynamic Duo, an incredibly special and unique Batman and Robin story for families, is a dream,” Reeves said in a statement to Deadline.
Given Reeves’ previous work on The Batman and its upcoming sequel, The Batman II, fans can expect a rich, character-driven story that feels both familiar and fresh. His storytelling has always leaned into the emotional core of Gotham’s heroes, so seeing him bring that same energy to an animated film aimed at families should be something special.
Swaybox shared more about their creative process, saying, “We’re bringing the magic of practical puppetry to the big screen in ways never before seen. Since 2014, Swaybox principals Arthur Mintz, Theresa Andersson, Noah Scruggs, Chris Armand, and Thomas Woodruff have pioneered new methods that challenge viewers’ notions of how puppets look, move, and feel.
“The result is long-form storytelling that is visually breathtaking, dynamically expressive, and—above all—more human.”
That approach sounds like the perfect match for a story centered on the relationship between Grayson and Todd, two characters whose friendship, rivalry, and shared connection to Batman have always been some of the most compelling parts of the mythology.
While Dynamic Duo isn’t set to release for another three years, DC has already given fans a taste of what’s to come, with the first footage offering a peek into the film’s unique visual style and heartfelt tone.
It’s rare for a project this early in production to share material, but it’s clear that everyone involved is proud of what they’re creating.
With Reeves, Gunn, and Swaybox all working together, Dynamic Duo could become one of the most creative Batman spinoffs ever made, a whole new way to reimagine the legacy of the Robins and the world of Gotham.
