Following the completion of Avengers: Doomsday, a new Marvel Cinematic Universe update on Avengers: Secret Wars has finally emerged. The Multiverse Saga is nearing its end, as there are only a handful of movies and TV shows slated for Phase 6, which kicked off this summer with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Avengers: Secret Wars is slated to begin principal photography in summer 2026. The brothers are currently in post-production on Avengers: Doomsday, with the trade noting that “additional photography expected to take place in the spring” before the Phase 6 finale starts shooting.

It was revealed in September 2025 that the Avengers: Doomsday cast had initially wrapped filming, but additional photography is always very common, especially for massive blockbusters like the MCU. The two Avengers installments mark a big return for the Russo brothers, especially after the massive success of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

As the Avengers: Secret Wars cast has only confirmed a handful of actors, there are still many theories on what other MCU alums may be back. A potential return of Josh Brolin as Thanos recently sparked speculation, following the actor’s recent interview with Entertainment Tonight on November 10, 2025:

Josh Brolin: If Joe Russo comes to me, which he may have, I don’t know, and has an idea, then I might acquiesce. Probably pretty quickly.

Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers Endgame

The world will be getting the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer in December 2025, as Robert Downey Jr. returns to the franchise, only this time as Doctor Doom, who will also be in Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel’s First Family will also be in both installments, with more stars getting announced at a later time.

There have also been a lot of thoughts about whether the Avengers movie will reboot the MCU when it arrives in 2027. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed to Variety on July 20, 2025, that they are eying a reset rather than a full reboot:

Kevin Feige: We’re utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-Endgame, just as importantly — and you can look at the Secret Wars comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future. Endgame, literally, was about endings. Secret Wars is about is about beginnings.

Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines.

X-Men is where that will happen next. They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong. That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.

As of right now, Avengers: Secret Wars is the only upcoming MCU movie in 2027, while Marvel Studios has several shows still slated to arrive over the next two years. The next solo installment before the Avengers sequels will be Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026, with Tom Holland currently shooting it.

Avengers: Secret Wars opens in theaters on December 17, 2027.
