The fifth day of the National Games started with good news for Hong Kong swimmers, as Siobhan Haughey led a trio from the city who advanced to the 100 metres freestyle semi-finals.

Haughey, fresh from her gold medal in the 200m freestyle on Thursday night, moved comfortably into the semis on Friday, winning her heat in a time of 54.29 seconds, the fastest overall among the 45 swimmers.

Two other Hong Kong swimmers, 16-year-old Li Sum-yiu and 17-year-old Gilaine Ma, also qualified for the semi-finals, clocking 55.4 and 56.04.

The semi-finals are scheduled to take place at 7.07pm and 7.13pm.

Haughey’s biggest competitor could be Yang Junxuan, representing Shandong, who set China’s national record for this event during her starting leg for the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Paris Olympics, with a time of 52.48.
