EXCLUSIVE: Wood Entertainment has closed a Latin American theatrical distribution deal with Cinépolis for Tim Burton: Life in the Line, the four-part documentary directed by Tara Wood (QT8: The First Eight) and executive produced by Allen Gilmer and Riki Rushing.

Cinépolis will release Tim Burton: Life in the Line across 50 cinemas in Mexico and 20 cinemas throughout the rest of Latin America. Cinépolis has said it will present each chapter as a “collective cinematic event.”

“This isn’t just a release — it’s a declaration,” director and producer Wood said in a statement. “The release of Tim Burton: Life in the Line reflects Tim’s own fight to protect imagination in a world that tries to flatline it — a reminder that art is human, and we have to hold on to ourselves. This independence was made possible by our executive producers, Allen Gilmer and Riki Rushing, true patrons of the arts who protected the film from corporate interference.”

The documentary traces Burton’s career through the lens of his frequent collaborators, including Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, and Michael Keaton. The project also features never-before-seen artwork and personal archives from Burton’s private collection.

Tim Burton: Life in the Line debuted at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Deadline’s Damon Wise described the film in his review as an “insightful portrayal of Hollywood’s gothic disruptor.”

“It’s hard to judge from one episode, but, if nothing else, Burton is a very good example of a director to follow through the studio system,” Wise wrote. “The auteur theory is practically designed for him; a director who only has story and character credits on his films (so far), and yet you know damn well who made them. For that, at least, a tip of the hat is due — and this docuseries is here for it.”

Wood Entertainment is continuing international sales on the project at the American Film Market.
